Having just observed someone taking 2 minutes to reverse their car into a parking space, i wondered why they were doing so in the first place.

I always drive into a space, and reverse out, simply because it's easier

Could a "reverser" please explain the reasoning for their peculiar behaviour?

Reversing makes sense because the car is a lot more maneuverable.

Women go in forwards.

Men go in backwards.

I find it easier to reverse in.

Actually also my car isn't the best to see out of, so it's easier to reverse in to where you know stuff is than reverse out and not be able to see something.

Depends on the space.

If I need access to the boot, I drive in. If not I reverse in.

I do it at work in the mornings. When i park, the car park is fairly empty, when i come back, it's not. Imagine parking at 90 degree's to the kerb, on a road. People park on both sides like this, and then the people that are late park in a straight line, right up the middle of the "road" (again, it's not a road, just the easiest way to describe it without drawing a picture)

I drive a 15 foot long shogun with a turning circle comparable to the QE2, to work at the moment. It's easier to drive out, than reverse out.
yes well described, this is much better. Also allows you to have the door between you and any potential attacker if you drive something nice.

This depends on the space and situation, obviously. Given a free choice I reverse.

One thing that's uniform is that if you plan to leave the motor to get cold while in the space, you will always have to reverse with a cold engine. Personally I prefer driving off forwards because of this.

Minor, but there you are.

Question for OP: do you reverse out onto the main road?

In busy carparks you get very little visability reversing out so have to edge out slowly, but you can drive forwards easily. Reversing into the space isn't much slower than forwards.

In my old Volvo S60, the turning circle was so poor it was almost impossible to swing into a narrow Tesco parking bay.

Reverse in, drive out, always. Far safer.

If i am at sainsburys then drive in. Better boot access you see!

Otherwise its a reverse park. Safer on the rims.

I reverse out of my drive, but not onto a main road.

I suppose i can understand it in a really big 4x4, but i've never had issues of manoeverability with any of the cars i've owned.

I'm not a woman so maybe i have some latent gene that makes me a massive parking gaylord?

Agreed.

When I was working up to a month ago, most people used to drive into spaces in the work multi-storey, as it's usually stops queue's building up, as most people didn't have the brains to stagger where they parked. Because then one noddy reversed out and nearly hit someone walking past the company H&S nazi's then decided that on safety grounds everyone must back in, which again, because the can't think for themselves retards, caused endless probs as people took several attempts to reverse into spaces blocking the way past for others. Then those that had laptops and other stuff in the boot used to park 3ft into the car park drive gangways so they could get the stuff out of the boot and leave the car like that further restricting movement.

Farcical situation really banghead

I always go in the opposite way around to the cars on either side of me so I can park with my passenger door close to the car next to me. This both reduces the chances of someone opening a door into my car and gives me more space to get in and out of the car. If possible I line my wing mirror up with the opening arc of the cars on each side so if they do fling open the doors, they hit my mirrors rather than the paintwork.

All other things being equal though, I'll reverse in. It's easier to reverse a car into a space than to drive in forwards because the front wheels take a wider arc than the rears as they're doing the steering. I also find it easier to judge where I am in the space when reversing because I can see the lines in my mirrors.

Depends on what side the other car is on.

I always try for a space that is only bordered by another car on one side, preferring a wall/kerb/flower bed etc for the other to limit potential for careless door openers. Park with the passenger side as tight as possible to the 'non-contact' side of the space regardless of if its a forward or reverse park...

reverse in, drive out. I was told this for 2 reasons:

1) if you can reverse into a space, you can always drive out. Not necessarially the case the other waya round.

2) At the end of a working day, you're tired, want to go home, and might not be as attentive as you should. In this situation, you're more likely to mis-judge distances when reversing/forget to check a mirror. But driving forwards you wont have a problem

Not true at all. I prefer to reverse in and drive out, unless the space makes it sensible to drive in and reverse out.
