I`m looking to change the rear silencer om my car and want someting that is small in diameter due to low ground clearence. I only have the one silencer fitted so a Cherry bomb etc is going to be too loud especially as i hope to take the memsahb to the South of France in it next year. Ilike the idea of a smooth type silencer with no `lip` or flat end to get ripped on a rough road so something that looks like a Cherry but is a bit less noisey, any one help?........Martin

What car is it?

And is there no way of fitting other silencers inline? They don't just have to form the tailpipe.

As for Cherry Bombs, well they are a brand more than a type of silencer. Most silencer/exhaust makers will offer a range of different size silencers.

As a rule running a bigger and/or longer silencer will result in more noise suppression ability. But running multiple silencers will have a similar affect.

A cherry bomb is just a straight thru design using glass fibre wading, which is a bit old hat these days. Most modern performance silencers will use a metal wading instead. If you want small, then "bullet" style silencer offer much the same thing.

Depending on the car/engine and HP level, flow rate and internal core diameter are important from a performance stand point, more so than external dimensions.

For good quality reasonable priced silencers have a look at Magnaflow (often very cheap if you buy of US ebay.com)

For top quality silencers try someone like Borla. http://www.borla.com/home.aspx

There are other silencer types, these don't use wading of any kind and are known as deflection silencers. They have metal plates and deflect the sound waves to the cancel each other out, reducing db levels.

There's a US company that makes very compact deflection mufflers called Powersticks http://www.classicchambered.com/classic/products.h...

If you don't have room to run multiple or longer smaller silencers, do you have any room behind the bumper to run a single large silencer? Even if it requires a bit of re-routing?
