Went to fill up the car yesterday at Swindons Tesco @4:45ish. Paid at the pump and was sat waiting for AGES whilst the camper ahead filled up then paid at the desk. I was looking around at the other cars whilst waiting (as you do smile) and noticed a big black Mercedes Coupe drive out of the petrol station with the cap hanging off/open and the hatch wide open.

A: How does the driver not notice this in their mirrors?

B: How do they manage it in the first place?!

C: How does the car, especially an expensive merc with all it's gadgets and gizmos, even start with the cap unscrewed?!

D: Other than the petrol evaporating and/or spilling out round a tight right hander are there any problems with leaving the cap open?

I drove to pick up the O/H in the direction the Merc had gone but didn't see them so they obviously hadn't stopped/noticed very quickly. No! I didn't see if it was a Woman okay? hehe

Dunno really but I guess with Pay-at-pump it's possible to be distracted getting your receipt after putting the nozzle back and next thing you know you're getting in your car..?

No, I haven't done this myself wink

A lot of newer cars have a spring loaded flap that covers the aperture until it's pushed open with the pumps nozzle

I got on first name terms with a very attractive sainsburys petrol station worker after I left the fuel cap of my old 106 there twice in one week, quite embarrassing turning up somewhere and people pointing at the rear saying "missing something?"

You had to put the keys in to remove/refit it, god knows why I took the keys out inbetween filling up!

Thankfully the BMW has a nice little holder for the cap, which is good, don't know what I'd do without that!

Yeah, mine has one of those, so leaving it open isn't really an issue in terms of petrol evaporating or spilling. I don't understand how people forget though. It's always been habit for me to replace the pump nozzle then fasten the petrol cap up before paying.

Me neither. Never forgotten to put the cap back on and close the flap. Ever. No sirree. Not in a million years. And I have most certainly never tried to go back out on track at Bedford having forgotten either.

I once took my MGB to a its MoT test via a petrol station since it was nearly empty... it failed the MoT on having no filler cap. boxedin

The solution is one of those locking filler caps where you can't remove the keys while it's off the car.

Isn't the opening for the fuel tank on the right hand side on all Mercs?

No, sounds like his cap lets him take the keys out for some reason.
