Maserati Plans Smaller Sibling For Quattroporte

Second saloon to join Maserati range in 2014

Maserati is set to create a baby brother for the Quattroporte saloon. The new sports saloon will sit below the XJ-sized Quattroporte, and will take on the upper reaches of the Mercedes E-Class, Jaguar XF and BMW 5-series ranges.

Details are scarce at the moment, but two versions are expected – one ‘basic’ version priced at around 55,000 euros and a high-performance version for 66,000 euros. Both will be powered by V8s, and the new car will go on sale some time in 2014.

The new ‘small’ saloon is likely to take its underpinnings from a shortened version of the chassis that will sit beneath the all-new Quattroporte, which is due in 2013.

The details of the new model were revealed as part of the Fiat group’s detailed 2010-2014 business plan, which was recently revealed to investors.

Maserati says it wants the new smaller saloon to take 10 percent of what it calls the ‘high-end E segment,’ while it hopes the new Quattroporte will be able to grab eight per cent of the luxury saloon segment.

But if 2013 is too long to wait, the PH classifieds offer plenty of pre-loved Maseratis...

Great news, as said above, there can never be too many Maseratis - one performance marque everyone seems to love.

Great news. Love looking at and listening to their cars, although I've always been a little scared of owning one.

How reliable is the current Quattroporte? I'm in the market for a 2/3 year old luxury car, but am afraid of buying a money pit...

JFDI!

I was in a position a few years ago to buy one and bottled it - a decision I've regretted ever since.

Goodbye Lancia. There was a fleeting chance, just once, to provide a point to your existence following the Integrale's demise, but sadly, no longer.

The Quattroporte and the Gran Turismo are two of the best looking cars on the road at present (IMHO). This looks like another beauty to add to the stable

Quattroportes get so much praise on this forum..but who has actually experience of one?

1. Since when is it a "super" Saloon? It's a 4 door saloon same as an S class, a 7 Series..so Porsche and Aston create this new (unnecessary) niche and suddenly the Quattro conveniently retro fits into this new class?

2. It's not particularity quick or sporty, I've driven one it makes lots of nice noise but lacks torque and just doesn't pull it's socks up the way you'd expect it too.

3. Unreliable and expensive to fix.

It's a handsome car and a nice place to be but I think it's overrated and can't understand why it's suddenly the car everyone's talking about

It would seem it's about the way it makes you feel. Most of its competitors are Teutonic sledgehammers. Also, it seems it offers the Italian supercar experience to people with a genuine need for four proper seats.

In the spirit of platform sharing, might it also share some bits with forthcoming Alfas and Chryslers?

Spot on. I think these cars, like e.g. Alfas to an extent, have soul - or at least that is the perception amongst enough people to make it worthwhile for them to keep on producing them.

It is not always about the numbers and I do think they have that certain something that the competition doesn't. And maybe there is a little bit of the British supporting the under dog attitude.

OK, so I buy a cheap(ish) Quattroporte, but is it going to have running costs similar to the offerings from Jag, Merc and BMW?

Maserati/Ferrari dealers aren't known for offering value for money.

It's a beautiful car no doubt, but as regards it offering a supercar experience, it doesn't in any way apart from the noise.

I've always lusted after a Maserati, agreed the 3200/4200 weren't very well built but the GT and QP are bloody lovely, the only thing that put me off them and why I bought a 997 instead of a GT is/was the servicing & maintenance costs why they charge so much and have to be serviced so often I'll never know.

Until they come into line with other high end manufacturers and match the servicing costs/intervals of Porsche they will always be just a pleasant dream for me.

But everytime I see one I want one.....

Surely if you're looking for a four-door saloon you're probably a family man with more concerns than what the number on the speedometer says, so something that goes about it's daily business rumbling and snorting and jumping through corners like a racing car is possibly more satisfying than some great big German barge that might offer up supercar numbers but feels merely like the mid-range diesel with some more power and torque in a performance envelope far out of reach of anything you'd ever attempt on a public road.

It sounds spectaular and looks even better.
