What fun daily driver?

It's 'what car' time...
My Aero is on its way out - nasty gearbox noises, leaky heater matrix, sticky brake calliper, rust and a million and one little niggles that mean it's probably not worth fixing. I'm leaning towards an MX5 because I fancy a little sports car again and I've had MR2s and 944s. Browsing the classifieds though I'm getting tempted by a 325 or even a 328 - I had great fun with my crappy 318 so I imagine it'll be even better with a bit more poke.
So - any other ideas? Budget's a couple of grand, maximum. I'd prefer super cheap really. I'm a big fan of a car I can happily discard when it's buggered, the Aero was 700 quid and I'll make most of that back selling the alloys and stereo. No real requirements seating or space wise, and it doesn't have to be good long distance as that gives me an excuse to use the 928. Not horrific fuel consumption and cheaper insurance than the Aero (can't be hard) would be a bonus.

Everyone is going to tell you to buy an MX5
Except S_line_luxury who will tell you to buy a R8.
I was hoping than mentioning the MX5 in the OP would get it out of the way and prompt the more exciting suggestions. I probably will still end up with one though - I'm thinking early jap model with the decent power 1.6 and a LSD. Except S_line_luxury who will tell you to buy a R8.
Hairy get a Golf gti mk2. You'll get one without history for about £500.
£200 to insure, 30+ mpg, Piece of piss to fix, retro-cool and surprisingly capable on the bends.
Go for a pre-cat 8 valver. They are immortal, and, in the unlikely event it dies replacements start at £200. 16 valvers also command a lot more of premium for obvious reasons.
I love my Mx5s but I can drive my ropey golf in the snow and stick my pushbike in the back.
Bargainous.

Save the money and use the 928.
I do quite a few short journeys which aren't ideal for it - it barely has chance to warm up. The fact that in town traffic it effortlessly achieves single figure mpg figures is a bit painful too.s2art said:
I see. I have to be trying a bit to get single figures in mine, however mine has a manual box which probably helps. I have always thought it best to use mine as often as possible, it seems to keep problems at bay.
Mine's a manual too and I agree that regular use seems to be the key! I've not had it all that long and I'm only just finishing off the 'refresh' after the previous owner had it laid up. Maybe the fuel consumption will improve now I've had the MAF recalibrated and it's had a good service. hairykrishna said:

I kinda suspect most 325 e30's or 328 e36's will be a tad rusty at this price or under. My Aero is on its way out - nasty gearbox noises, leaky heater matrix, sticky brake calliper, rust and a million and one little niggles that mean it's probably not worth fixing. But if you only plan to chuck them at some point, I'm not sure it's an issue.
Think either these or an MX-5 could well be a giggle for this money.
Lots of MGF's about too, and you'll more and newer MG for your money.
Others I'd find interesting would be something like an XJ40 Jag or if you want newer, then you should be able to get an MG ZS180. Good chassis, fab handling and pretty quick too. Lot of car for the money.
Just to bring some closure to a what car thread...
Got a cosmetically rough MX5 for £750. It's a 1989 import with the 1.6 - LSD too. Bargain! I like it a lot more than the couple of MX5's I've driven in the past with 1.8's, the revvy little engine adds to the feeling that you're really wringing it's neck pushing on at sensible speeds. Good fun!
