Hi Guys,

I will be heading out on a Road Trip that takes in Geneva during August. Just wondering if anyone has a vignette that is not stuck their screen that they want rid of?

I will be willing to pay for it of course (say 50% of normal price), if someone has one they are not going to use, and is at least valid for August 2010.

Anyone?

That is impressively tight , on another note I don't think you need one . I certainly didn't buy one when there last month . The services are really worth stopping for

Cheapskate.

They stick them on the windscreen for you to avoid this particular con. When you remove them they distort and will not stick on properly again, so they can spot you've just used someone else's.

Pay up at the border like everyone else.cop

Or just avoid the Autoroutes en Suisse.

The last one we bought for a German hire car in order to drive through Switzerland was affixed in a fashion which would make it almost impossible for you to remove it from the windscreen (and keep it in one piece). It had little cuts in the main body of the sticker so bits would be left behind if you pulled it off, obviously you could pull all the bits off but it would be like a jigsaw trying to put them on to your screen. And even if that worked, the automatic cameras might not pick it up.

I think they're about £40, if I were you just buy one at the border.

LOL - i was waiting for the cheapskate comments!

I will only be in Geneva for 1 night, before heading to Martigny to take the Gt. St. Bernard Pass. Do you only need the vignette if using motorways?

Yes, only if using Motorways. Last Tuesday I drove Chamonix - Martigny - G St Bernard - P St Bernard - Albertville - Chamonix. No vignette needed as no motorways used.

Well,

I have to go to Geneva, since we have a hotel booked now. So, anyone who has been into Geneva from the A40/A401, do you arrive on the motorway at the border? Can you arrive on it, and then not use the motorway after the border?

Or do you need to approach it from an alternative route?

Or should I just forget it, and buy the damn thing and be done with it?

Come off the A40 at j.13 (or poss. just before, the junction numbering is a little confusing on the Michelin map) and take the d1201 to St.Julien en Genevois, then follow the signs for Geneve which will lead you onto the Avenue de Geneve and the border crossing. The ave de geneve then becomes the route de st.julien which takes you straight to Carouge (suburb of Geneva) and thence to central Geneva.

Bit of a faff to avoid 40chf IMHO, you'll probably spend that on 2 beers at the hotel.

Cheers guys, will see what happens.

Cant be doing with the faff to avoid it, time is of the essence.

There are a lot for sale on ebay, so might just see what happens on there - or get one at the border point.

Anyone know if credit and debit cards work at petrol stations in Switzerland, Italy and France?

Lets get this straight you would rather buy a fake one off fleabay than spend 40 or so euros on a real one

UK Cards are accepted in those countries although may well not work in the pay-at-pump machines, so make sure the kiosk is open. I bought a vignette from a petrol station at the border on the Chamonix - Martigny road on Friday because I was using the autoroute past Lausanne from there. Really easy.
