...just how good these cars can be?

With prices as keen as they are, I'm surprised there's not more following in using them as track cars. Seriously tempted myself....

I must have missed that episode! Didn't know you could get a supercharged one!
The standard ones do look good value though, however my mate has one and it's not exactly been trouble free!

HGF ?!

My god ! 30k ! Back in when ? 98 ? No wonder they never caught on. (OK, yes, that's the supercharged modified version).

I might be wrong but don't many Elises and Caterhams use the same engine??

which made it more powerful, faster and lighter than a 2.8 Z3 for the same money and according to VBH £4k cheaper than Elise. confused

BTW - according to the web, they did catch on, being as they were the UK's best selling Roadster for much or all of their production.

IIRC HGF was only a problem when the engine was put in heavy applications (freelander) in the Elsie / mgf / caterhams it wasn't that much of a problem, plus is one that can be easily solved.

Would like an MGF/TF but I was a bit disappointed when I drove one, you were too high up.

If the worst problem an engine has is HGF then that's not too bad is it? I know it has twin cams and stuff (and I guess VVC might complicate it) so it's not as easy as some to change but really many engines have much worse problems. Nikasil issue on BMW/Jaguar engines, plastic water pumps and weak chain tensioners on vauxhall/jaguar/many other engines, rear oil seal and bore wear on 911's etc etc there's lots of good things about the K series, being light and powerful.

HGF, as long as you fix it when it happens and not when the engine seizes due to low oil pressure, is not a huge problem.

I like the consept with the overhead intake. The K-series was fragile enough without adding boost to the equation.

Thing is though, face with the choice of an MX5 with utter indestructibleness and reliability for the same price, yet better handling and in the eyes of many, better looks, why would you go for an MGF?

They're compromised in too many ways from the outset compared to an MX5. For instance, no boot.

The K-series isn't really "fragile" as such. The only endemic problem is the head gasket which predominantly fails (1) because Rover used cheap minor components (such as the head locating dow.els) and (2) because rover didn't screw the things together properly (so they ended up with uneven liner heights, etc). Add to that the fact that the external cooling system wasn't very good and tended to introduce a significant thermal shock to the engine when the thermostat opened and it was a failure waiting to happen.

All of these problems are quite easy to resolve, however, so it's possible that they did, in this application.

confused The MGF has a significantly bigger boot than the MX5.

I've owned both a MGF and a couple of MX-5's,

I've never owned a car so sensitive to tyre choice as the MGF, when I bought mine it had budget tyres (in the correct sizes though) and it was virtually impossible to drive. A switch to Toyo's sorted that. It wasn't a bad car and never gave me any trouble but to be honest i found the MX-5's a better experience in almost every respect.

If it's mid engine you want in this catergory then one of the last MR2's would be my pick. I've driven a couple and they are very impressive. Certainly not down to the budget £1000 MGF/MX-5 level but a 3 grand MR-2 makes more sense than maybe a 6 grand Elise IMHO.

I doubt it, can you fit two golf bags in it?

No idea, but I do know that you wont in an MX5 unless you take the spare wheel out which is cheating.

You will be able to buy them new soon.

They were at the moving motorshow at goodwoood with a new one along with a "new" hatch. Looked just like the old ones....

£14k for a brand new one, assembled in china and finished over here.

I wasn't "stunned", just interested.

For what its worth I thing a used one would be a billy bargain. Only in a rusty Mk1 MR2 do you get mid engined for this cash. Surprised there aren't more track day MGFs. I suppose the MX5 is its problem.

The MGF has a huge boot rolleyes I know as I used to carry my guitar and amp round in one, you must be thinking of the MR2 MKIII. But lets face it, if you are getting that basic detail wrong, I'm not really going to listen to the rest of your points.... tongue out

True enough, but by that measure there were more changes from F to TF than there were from S1 Elise to S2 Elise. And they still make the Elise also, still looking pretty much the same....
