Afternoon Chaps,

My '91 Mk2 Golf Gti failed it's MOT yesterday on the fuel cap not forming a proper seal. Basically the metal filler neck is corroded beyond repair.

The fuel filler neck forms part of the tank so I can't just replace that part with another one.

If I can't get one from a breakers at the weekend, my plan is to cut out the fuel filler neck and jubilee clip in some silicon hose of sufficient diameter that the cap then fits in.

So it should be air tight but won't be a threaded.

Does anybody know of any other MOT regs that would affect whether that would pass an MOT?

Thanks,

Gareth

Can't help with your issue, sorry.

But you've really not had much luck with that Golf of yours. Strange when the PH massiv' would have you believe VAGs are infallible.

Hope you get it sorted.

It's more reliable than most 19 year old cars that have never had an easy drive in their life I suppose.

Definately not in reliability stakes to the to jap metal mind...

You are better off just buying a new one. I know for the mk1 it is an east replacement job and not expensive to do (new filler neck about £40) I'm sure you can get a new one for the Mk2 as well.

According to mainstream parts suppliers... You can't get filler necks for a mk2 Golf.

Allegedly, it's an integrated part of the tank which is £140 + fitting + vat. I have yet to take it apart myself to find out as the garage still has my car.

I'm increasingly thinking a hacksaw and some piping is the way forward...

Have they definately failed it for that? Because if you have an emergency type fuel cap it will fail for the exact same reason ..

FFS, it's 19 years old!

You would expect unreliability on a newer Golf, but not a MK 2 winkbiggrinbiggrin

I'd be very careful about using a hacksaw. One spark could mean it never gets an MOT.

From what you describe it will fail.

cant you just swap in a tank from a scrap yard car ...its not that bad to do

theres no room for hacksawing in situ anyway , and i think the neck is a random shape so your plan wont work so good

is the end rotted away to nothing? any scope for a smear of jb weld and sand it smooth , then some matt black paint ?

No I'm suggesting the MOT station have failed it for the wrong cap, not the corrosion

Allow me to save you some hassle.

Get yourself on ebay or to U pull it at inverkiething just across the water from you.

Buy a decent used tank and fit it.

Seriously it's the only way and will cost pennies to do.

Fair enough.

Seems odd though. I mean afterall it's a tight fit. The only difference is I'll be using a threaded cap.

I'll get a cap and filler neck from the scrappy and make it fit.

Cheers for your interest in my personal well being but I'm not (quite) that daft.

It's the plastic I'll be cutting and secondly the whole pipe will be stuffed with a rag on string.

Cap is OEM as is filler neck.

It is massively corroded. I would dispute that it didn't form an adequate seal but it's not the worst thing a 19 year old car can fail on!

All the tank mounts are rotten. All the bolts will sheer and require drilling and tapping. And I have neither a proper drill or a tap and die set.

I admit that's the best way but me now only having 7 days before it stings me for another £50 for a retest, and having zero change of changing the tank by then, it's as well I try and bodge it.

U Pull at inverkeithing eh? They good for VW parts?

It's not rotted to nothing. I thought of doing that as well but I'm convinced the bds will just fail me again.

If you're right about the hacksaw space then it might be worth a punt though...

I'll assess whether it can be changed for another piece with a cunning arrangement of jubilee clips and a replacement filler neck.. Then I'll see if I can bodge it by rubbing down and painting.

Failing that it will have failed anyway so I'll just fit a new tank.

All this fking non-sense for a filler neck! Unbelievable!

I would definately be tempted to ring VOSA - the inspection applies to the cap and the fitment of a rubber seal which can be present or not present. There is no way to test it in situ so it has to be pass and advice.
