Hey,

I am looking at getting a new car (2nd Hand) and have about £8,000-£9,500 to spend....I have 5 years no claims so insurance isn't really a problem for anything group 15 and under! I do roughly 6,000 miles a year but the majority of them on the motorway.

I am open to all suggestions really but I want something that is quick that isn't going to cost me the earth to run....any advice you can give me would be appreciated....

Cheers

Rob

you after a comfy cruiser? a convertible? something blisteringly fast and raw? a 2door? 3door? 4 door? 5 door? a hot hatch? a barge? a 2 seater? 20 year sold? 10 years old or just a couple of years old? does mileage concern you?

any clues at all?

Welcome to PH!

So much about at that price I don't know where to start! What you looking for?

Small and light?
Big Barge bruiser?
Stylish coupe?
Practical hatch?
Sensible saloon?

Ideally a hot hatch is what I am looking for.....something that is quick, 3 doors, Petrol or Diesel, I am 22 so want something that is fast but something I can afford to run....I have been looking at a Astra 1.9CDTi or 1.8 SRi but it is just lacking something about it.....but that is the sort of size car i am looking at! Hope this helps

Something with a V8 would be my choice. There was a very nice DOHC 4.6 V8 Mach 1 sn95 Stang on Ebay a few months back for under £9k. Think you'd struggle to top it in terms of speed, power, pace, age and running costs.

Alternatives would be Jap turbo stuff (or n/a if you include the 350z). Equally as good, but different.

Other end of the spectrum would be lightweight cars like an Elise, VX220 or Westfield type of thing.

up to group 15 insurance is a stumbling block for most quick cars including the focus RS.

Define 'quick'. I don't consider the Astra quick TBH.
Ok well lets just say my last car was a 1.4 with 105ps so anything sub 8.5 seconds to 60 would do.....

I ran a few quotes for an RS a couple of years back and was always astonished at how cheap they came back as being! Really wish I would have got one now - have always liked them!

Group 15 isn't very high, you'll get a good quote I'm sure with 5 years NCB on higher groups.

More information would be good, what type of engine do you like, how old, what is the useage, how many seats ect

Mini Cooper S perhaps? Ignore 'gay / girly' image - these are cracking cars.

Skoda VRS /VAG e.g. Seat stuff might be worth a look, but their interiors are pretty dull.

You're not going to get excited driving an Astra.

lol, sorry. Only just seen your 2nd post.

Well a big welcome and hello to PH! biggrin

Apologies though, you said you where looking for fast, or as you say in this post "something that is quick". Which is cool

But I kinda got lost when you then said 1.9 diesel Astra or maybe a 1.8.......

At 22, with a bit on money to throw at a car and only 6000 miles a year (so very low mileage) I'd want to be looking at something a little more extreme.

If insurance is still an issue, kits and classics are going to be your best bet. But you might need to spend some time calling some specialist insurers.

So why not look at things like these:

GTM Libra 1.8 VHPD (2003)
13,000 miles £9,995
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1726528.htm

tvr 400se 48,000 miles racing green (1991)
47,500 miles £7,500
http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1863657.htm

1990 944 Turbo 81000 miles (1990)
81,000 miles £6,500

Civic type S would maybe suit you needs, under group 15, fast (by your standards it seems hehe) and not too pricey to run. But I'd have a type R. Also look at Integras. Also the Alfa GTV and BMW 330ci e46

GTV is a group 17.... nice thought though. What about a 2 litre 147?

Nope is was a Rover 25 but I basically made it into a Zr by the end.....

I want 4 seats, I want something newish no more than 5 years old ideally....just becoz i dont want to have to deal with something breaking down! I would like a 2.0 Petrol...but dnt want a little car altho i am tempted by the Clio Trophy tbh!
