Went in this morning to order a whole collection of bits for my E36, service was superb, parts staff were courteous and really friendly.

Walked over to the showroom and was nosing around a 120d Sport ss my wife is considering one as her next car, despite me getting in and out, trying the rear seat for space, opening and closing boot etc I was studiously ignored for 20 minutes, despite being the only (potential) customer in there.

As I was walking back to my car a sales exec shouted after me to see if he could help, I asked him if he could direct me to the Audi dealership as I wanted to see if all premium brand sales exec were t***ers

I have worked in the motor industry and I often wonder why parts dept people aren't drafted in to sell cars, they are so much more customer focussed

I think it's usually because sales-people are loud and confident, the parts department on the other hand are not used to push sales as much and usually deal with what a customer definately wants rather than potentially ie No requirement to be pushy with a sale.

Have to agree though, sales staff do not want the sales these days

If that's where I think it is I couldn't agree more. 9 months ago I was looking at a Z4 and they couldn't be less helpful about getting me a car to try. In the end bought a Z4M from the Stafford dealer and have great delight in making sure I park it up as close to the salesman's desk which looks onto the car park everytime I go there for bits for my E30.

In contrast the parts department are brilliant.

Good, that's how I (and many others) like it, if I need help, I'll come and ask for it, it's not exactly rocket science. Acknowledgement would be nice, but why do so many people take it as a personal affront when they're not?

So the one guy that did, albeit belatedly, offer help, you were rude to him?

I really do wonder about these posts sometimes.

Maybe he was just letting you have a look around before asking. Are you sure it was 20 whole minutes opening and closing the boot and getting in and out of a single car?! Sounds like a very long time to me. Some people look like they need help, or want to ask a question and some don't. If you did indeed say that to the sales guy when he asked you for help then that was rude of you, and uncalled for.

The parts guys there are a credit to their company. One of the guys in parts, whose name begins with C, couldn't be more helpful if he tried.
Last time I tried to book my 840 in for diagnostic work they told me that BMW had never made an 8 series. Oh well

Agreed with said dealership Parts dept are brillant and helpful. Sales a bit slow on the up take. There was one guy there that was helpful in new car sales. Shame he was off the day i went into buy a new car i ended up at Audi.

Went to a Land Rover dealer yesterday, asked if they had a facelift Sport I could have a sit in.

Salesmen - 'there's some over there but they're sold and locked, I'll see if I can find one'.

I wait around for 20 minutes and then later find the salesman talking to another member of staff, laughing and joking, look at me as if I didn't exist, so I waited another 5 minutes before walking out...
Agreed

As a newcomer to the brand it was blatantly obvious that up until early 2009 no bugger ever had to do much work to flog a LR product

The first few dealers I tried were just rubbish
Cant be 4rsed doesnt even do them justice

It was a clear 20 minutes - not one person acknowledged my existence, even the receptionist. I do not like being "pounced" on but neither do I appreciate being totally ignored. Sales staff were grouped around two desks whiling away their time, they knew I was there and I was only approached after I had physically left the showroom.

As for me being rude, I do not believe I was, the ultimate in rudeness as far as I'm concerned is being a potential customer and being blatantly ignored, you reap what you sow in my opinion.

I was doing some work with a Mercedes dealer in Merseyside yesterday and continually witnessed what I consider to be top class customer service by sales execs, courteous, polite and professional without being pushy, surely every potential customer has the right to expect a decent level of service

I had a similar experience at the BMW and Audi dealers in Stoke when I was looking around last year. I turned up in temporary runabout I'd bought after handing back the company car and was soundly ignored by both sets of sales people, and even when I did ask a few questions, I was pretty much given one sentence replies and handed a brochure.

I did go back again to look at the Q5, but this time I was in the TVR, and practically pounced on the moment I stepped through the door.

On the flipside though, the father of an ex was rather wealthy and was a regular at Maranellos in Surrey. I've been in there a few times with him and noticed that a large portion of their customers look like they would be blanked in many "prestige" dealerships just on their initial appearance and dress.

The Parts guys at all the Peugeot Dealerships in adn around where I live(Have tried 5!) are all truly shocking not interested in serving you, if the item is out of stock usual 7-10 day response. No calls back when parts ordered constantly have to chase.

Now I buy main dealer parts from Scotland as the guys over the phone there are truly fantastic.

As per Dealers some prefer the you approach us school of thought while others will jump on you from the off. I guess after getting people constantly saying just browsing, some think that you should approach them.
