Looking for a replacement for my daily drive Volvo v40 tdi bought it when I did a big mileage with a job change a few years ago only use it for social use looking to down size and get away from the oil burners.

What i am after is 4 seats, petrol, 4WD/RWD ideal, and a good size boot and more fun than a old Volvo to drive day to day within a 3k budget as its left on the driveway for 3 weeks at a time when i am away working so must be reliable for when i get home.

I'd say it depends on how much risk you want to take.

A BMW 3/5 series could be a decent bet... Bit boring a choice though.

If you can find one you should get a decent Audi urS4/6 for that, a rare choice which would make it more interesting, but don't be fooled, although the engines are as strong as they come, the running costs wont be.

You stipulated 4 seats and 4WD or RWD, so I'm not sure how many options there are.

Merc? Would an old school C36 be in budget? It's GOING to require bits and pieces constantly even if you can.

OK, this might sound a bit wacky, but what about an Octavia 4x4 Elegance? The previous generation 1.8T will reliably chip to about 225 BHP and has 4WD. Perhaps not the last word in fun or great looks, but it fits the bill in terms of budget, reliability, space, etc...

Just out of interest, are these full time 4WD?

I'll be the first then....
328 Sport, or if it needs to be a 4 door you could get a saloon or even a touring. Easily gets 30mpg, great to drive, seats 4 comfortably and 3k will get you a good example.

No, it's the haldex system - don't let that put you off though, it saves fuel and is for almost all purposes, as good as permanent 4WD.
