I went out today to start my dad's 2.5 V6 S-type and was greeted with a number of problems, none of which were there before.

A little background information;

The car is a 2004 model on an 04 plate, has full service history at either the main dealer or a local jag specialist and is on nearly 70k.

It has sat idle since february when the insurance ran out, due to my dad's redundancy (he loves the car so didn't want to sell it) it couldn't be renewed.

It has been turned over and driven down the road (privite) every couple of weeks to try and stop the brakes sticking etc...

However;

When i started it today to do the above it was reluctant to start, with the radio turning off and on inline with the rev's - i put this down to a flatish battery and switched off all un-necissary electrics.

The dash however threw up two warnings, 'ABS fault' and Gearbox fault'

I took the car down the road as normal and a few sharp stops seemed to turn off the ABS warning for a short while, however more worryingly the car is reluctant to accelerate, less power and acceleration, even on 3/4 throttle , to a 1.0 polo.

In addition to this the gearbox makes a rather nasty clunking sound (from the rear axle) and causes the car to judder violently when moved between drive and reverse and back, even if the car is fully stopped and has been for any amount of time.

The gearbox is the primary worry along with the engines reluctance to rev....i presume the abs fault is linked to the car being stood for a period of time.

Does anybody have idea of any basic things i can check to get an idea of the cause of the problem?

How does the engine run with the gearbox in park? Is it possible to rev the engine while it's in park? I'm no expert but if it has gearbox problems while its running in drive this might limit the engines ability to rev correctly?

No oil under the car at all, will go and give it a check to see if it rev's in neutral

Sounds like partially seized rear brakes due to lack of use.

good news, when i re-started it it reved happily in neutral/park and the gearbox fault had disappeared. The abs warning was still on, a few sharp goes on the brakes and that went off again. The car is running as good as new agin.

Was it just a software fault on start-up caused by a flattish battery?

Batteries cause all sorts of transient gremlins in E38 BMW's so I'd guess a "Ford in a frock" would be similar?

Or is the S type the "Lincoln in a frock"?
