Probably a strange question, but the other half has just got a job as a HGV driver and he's on his first day of a week out.

He has done around 370 miles so far today, and asked his boss when is he likely to need to fill up, to be told, 'the tank indicator won't move till tomorrow'

At the moment 95% of the time it's saying he has a near enough full tank, but every now and then it really dips.

I have tried googling the average miles per tank and am getting nowhere, so thought I would ask here, he just wants a ball park figure of when to expect it to happen, just a rough idea of milage. Obviously, he doesn't want to fuel up too fast, but he doesn't want to run out on the M6.

He's in a 05 plate DAF CF85.

So if anyone can give us a rough idea of the average mileage, he would be grateful, he knows how far he can get on a tank in the car, just wants to know what this hgv can give him.

Thanks

  • ps, I am learning far more about the damn trucks than I ever wanted to!
edited because I hit 9 instead of 0 for the year!

They do 7-8mpg according to Google. Does he know how big the fuel tanks are?

Just asked him and he hasn't got a clue how big his tanks are!

He has just reported that the needle has stopped flicking about and is now slowly starting to drop, so he thinks that hs boss was right in saying that it will show tomorrow. But then he only has around 40 miles left to do today.

Tank is 430 litres, which is about 95 Gallons. So at 7mpg it should be 650+ miles per tank.

Google finds some with tank sizes ranging 300 to 600 litres so that's 500 to 1000 miles ish.

The fleet I work with have '59 plate CF85's with Alloy wheels and a 6x2 axle. They average 8.1 mpg and from memory the tanks are 430l (about 95 gallons) standard - you can get stupid size tanks though - usually seen on the continental boys.

On this basis the range will be about 700 miles. A good way to check truck tanks is to look in it (seriously) although if the vehicle has anti-syphon devices you can't do that.

ETA: Beaten to it by others!

Thank you, I think that must have been the only pdf I didn't find. Everything I was finding was telling me all about AdBlue, how comfy the cab is etc etc.
