Sale of my car should go through this week and I'll have 10k max to spend on a new one.
I'd love a e39 m5 but am slightly put off by possible repair bills etc. Fuel isn't a massive issue as I only do around 6k a year.
Any other alternatives?

Audi S or RS
Merc AMG
BMW M
MG ZTT V8
Volvo R
Saab Aero
etc etc

Without further criteria, such as age, driven wheels, max mileage etc you'll get some very vague answers.

Don't want anything older than the m5, need to get 2 kids in, no epic mileage.
Would like a nice interior and something not too ott.

Might be worth considering:

Legacy spec B estate:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1860452.htm

A bit cheaper and higher mileage but still a nice looking car (imo) and a bit different. Legnum VR4

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1766689.htm

Or this just for the comedy value of leaving most things (including M5s and fast audis) for dead, 475bhp at the wheels, Stagea:

http://www.pistonheads.com/sales/1792489.htm

It's not pretty or stylish and probably a bit ropey inside but what the hell.

Lastly if you can settle for just a saloon then monaros are just coming into that kind of budget smile

Why no on the MG? Certainly has the interior, also a sorted chassis, looks subtle (but good) and a solid motor. Lots of tuning potential too if it's not quick enough.

My dad used to have a mg saloon a few yrs ago and yes although they do have a nice interior, don't really want to go back to that.
Although with a v8 it could be interesting!

Funnily enough, I had exactly the same criteria as you, and ended up with an E39 M5 smile

If you buy smart, you shouldn't have any big repair bills (touch wood)... you'll have a big rs grin every time you drive it instead wink

Or, alternatively, go for my number 2 choice; a Skoda Octavia vRS (Mk2) Estate.

Bear with me here. This is cheap because of the interior. For a few hundred quid you could get all the leather re-connolised to black, and the wood trim either swapped out or wrapped black/carbon etc.

There is little to touch a V8 400bhp E39 M5 at this sort of money IMHO. One of the best cars I ever owned. Apart from the interior this has FBSH from one dealer, and only 1 previous owner.

2000 W M5 Individual 5.0 V8 6-speed 64,000 miles, FBMWSH, Le Mans blue metallic with individual violet blue heritage leather, TV, sat/nav, heated electric memory seats, climate controll, cruise controll, CD multiplay, rain sensing wipers, electric rear blind & side blinds, xenon headlamps, electric glass sunroof, headlamp power wash, park distance controll, electric adjustable steering column.

A fantastic super saloon with a full list of options. Only 1 previous owner and a full service history, all at Preston Hall BMW main dealer. A truely excellent cherished example. May p/x. £10,995

I didnt know you could do that with leather- if so, good plan.

Its a real mixed bag with those m5's- you can get some lovely interiors, or some truely hideous body colour / interior combos

Yup. Money does not buy taste!

As for the re-connolising, yes, there are plenty of really good firms who can make a leather interior look new, AND change the colour...

Even just a very dark blue, and losing the wood should do it. You could also swap the Nav screen for a Widescreen DVD version (and the unit in the boot from CD). I did this on mine, and it isnt too expensive if you source the bits on ebay and sell the original parts.

The only thing with this plan is that I'm fairly sure by the time all this work had been done, you'd have spent enough to have bought a very good facelift M5 in the first place with all the gear and a decent colour combo. Not a certainty I just didn't think that particular one looked especially cheap.
