I know there are a number of ex offenders on here, and would be interested on their experiences of insuring their car once convicted.
My son is still in prison but will be doing paid resettlement soon. He will then be allowed to have a car at the prison to travel to and from the job. I am trying to get quotes for him using the 'offender friendly' list of insurers from the Unlock web site.
Has anyone else been through this exercise and if so, which insurance companies did you find gave you the best deal?

Do insurers care about non-motoring convictions?

A high percentage of main stream insurers won't even quote you if you have a criminal conviction!

What did he end up in prison for if you don't mind me asking?

I only know of one person who was insured with a criminal conviction, but I'm afraid I can't remember who it was with!

I DO remember it being about £3,000 for a 28 year old male to insure a 1.2 Seat Ibiza. Good luck with your search.

Why on earth would you want to ask that?

Out of interest to see if it affected the quote. A fraudster might get a different quote to say, a pub brawler.

I know someone, 6 months sentence for assault, 1 year ban DD, and 2 claims by 21. £2,750 for a 1.4 golf after the ban. 4 years later, and 3 points, £1,200 last renewal for a GTI. All 3rd party only, Tesco.

Doesn't seem extortionate, though I believe insurance companied don't like theft or fraud convictions.

I didn't know that. I clearly remmeber filling in the bit about my points on the online quote, but I don't recall answering a question on non-motoring convictions. I guess I must have done and forgotten.

Best of luck - sorry I don't have anything useful to add! smile

Insurance companies often do not ask you if you have criminal convictions. However, the onus is on you to tell them anyway. If you have any criminal conviction you must inform the insurance company, unless it is spent. Failure to do so will render your policy invalid even if they didn't ask you about any criminal convictions!!

He has been quoted £444 for a 1999 Renault Kangoo 1.9D. I don't think this is too bad. Prior to prison he had a 2005 Impreza WRX Turbo which was £900 to insure.

I can't help much with the insurance question but I'd like to offer your son my best wishes for the future - it's not easy returning to life on the outside, regardless of the length of time spent locked up. It sounds like he's got the support of his family though - good luck to all of you!

Thanks - that's much appreciated. He certainly does have the support of his family. Before this he had a good job and worked hard. He made a mistake and now he's paying for it ( and will continue to pay with issues like insurance ).

But unless you have a quote or quotes from other offenders how will you know?

Maybe it does depend on the offence then, around 12 years ago a self-employed truck driver went to a party had a drop too much to drink, next morning the police were banging on his house door, accused of aggravated rape,he denied the charge and his wife also said he had never been out of her sight all night, nevertheless found guilty and got 18 months.

I asked him if this affected his HGV licence,Operators licence or his insurance,he said not a bit, neither DVLA,Traffic commisioners or ins co were interested.

That sounds odd. The starting point for rape is five years. So, a sentence of 18 months for aggravated rape is not likely!!

Guessing the CPS didn't think the evidence was sufficient for the higher charge and went for sexual assault, 18months os about bang on for sexual assault.

...by touching maybe but very unlikely for penetration.

Oddly, this was raised recently and someone with an assault conviction (pub fight) had his premium increased a few hundred quid. he didn't think it relevant but in terms of road behaviour and temper, it has to be. I imagine that dishonest people are going to be a higher risk for making a massaged or bogus claim and sexual and drunk offences are likely to show use of a vehicle at possibly more risky times. I mean come on, if it was you, you would have to assume the worst.

Not all criminals are dishonest.
