The GFs AA renewal has just come through - its more expensive than last year, and almost double the offer price on the website.

Its also almost double there nearest competitor.

Am I likely to have much luck phoning them up to haggle?

Or should I leave and go with someone else?

ETA: God knows how I was trying to spell renewal.

If you ask them about a renewal yes. Mine came down from 177 to 115 after discussion.

Do a search, this topic comes up quite often. They will match the web quote you got at the very least by just calling them.

Never had a competative quote though the AA
Try Adrian Flux and mention Pistonheads, members get a discount.

I think he's talking about roadside assistance.
As someone else said, they will match the web price of their competitor.

Look at ADAC, bit of a faff to join but it'll probably be a damn sight cheaper than the AA even though they contract out UK breakdowns to them!

hi

i have just had my renewal through £89 for me and the misses for roadside (with coplimentary homestart). the breakdown is £59 for me and £30 for the management. Now i recently watched a tv advert and new member price was £39. I rang up and bascially said why am i being ripped off (a loyal customer of 10+years) and new member get it cheaper, to be told that the price is what is it and tough. ok cancel it i said cos i can get the same cover probabily cheaper elseware. 2 mins later it had been halved. so now cheaper than anywhere else. I asked why they just did not do that in the first place and was given some bull. i wonder how many people wont complain and just pay. The conversation ended with me asking if i would be having this conversation again in a years time and was told by the AA representative yes i probabily would

at least he was honest

complain and you may get it cheaper

The AA are (deservedly so) getting alot fo stick on PH recently, due to this sort of behaviour.
Losing alot of custumers because of it as well.

Haggled for 3 years, always got a discount down to at least the current internet offer price, didnt get there this year and just fed up of having to do it, so got better? cover a lot cheaper at GEM Motoring assist. very good service on the changeover/set up, but not had to call them out yet.

I've said it before, and I'll say it again: Auto Aid!

Don't just take my word for it though:

They did this to me from 150 all in in 2009 to 227 all in for 2010. I called to find an cold non-customer friendly place.

Prior to calling I got a few quotes from the other sides and ran them by the AA, also mentioned their own web price for new members. After a few minutes I gave up and contracted the opposition, I asked them to cancel the renewal. They get even worse if you ask them to put things in writing.

I say vote with your feet if there are others who provide same services. I also like the ADAC cover, I'll save that for next year.

I got the toppest, highest cover through CSMA (Brittannia but with some kind of civil service discount) for me and the OH and it was something like 79 inc homestart, hotels, hire cars, euro cover etc.

A similar level of cover with the AA was nearly 400 at renewal.

Yup, or cashback £20 for RAC basic cover = £8 pa, I don't think the AA/RAC will give you those prices over the phone smile we tend to alternate between the two for these deals.

+1 I get AA Homestart through Quidco every year. Very cheap for a decent service without having to mess about with a cheaper substitute.
