Oxford County Council is withdrawing funding from the local SCP meaning 72 fixed and 89 mobile camera sites should be shut down within the month.

Suffering from a bad case of sour grapes, Dan Campsall from the Thames Valley Road Safety Partnership ignored the experience of Swindon, where removing scameras had no noticeable effect on road safety and said "We may be counting the cost of this in terms of bodies". He'll certainly be counting his Job Seekers Allowance in September. . . . .

Wow they're withdrawing from using mobile scameras too! I live in Oxon and used to see mobile scameras quite regularly, looking forward to not being so worried about getting caught out!!

If they positioned them at accident blackspots or outside schools, then maybe. I doubt there'll be many bodies piled up at the bottom of a downhill straight section of dual carriageway.

I suspect he and his colleagues will be the only one counting the cost in this particular case

Apparently the police will still use speed traps, so don't try maxing your car on the A34 just yet! hehe

Yep. Thieving bar stewards have their van behind a bush on a straight section of road near where I work. A tiny little sign on a distant lamp post makes it legal. fking good riddance.

I don't think they even need that these days?

I thought they did for some reason, but ready to be proven wrong.

Where i live they hide almost all of the van in a bin yard on the side of the road, proper last second slam on brakes, if they were open people would speed there but more to the point no one would be slamming their brakes on which is dangerous

Maybe they'll do something about the ridiculously low speed limits which have been imposed across Oxfordshire.

Too many of us have been arbitrarily turned onto law breakers recently.

The cut in partnership funding is so drastic that full and immediate withdrawal of services is the only option.
Only in authoritarianism land can enforcement of widely unpopular and arbitrary laws be spun as a "service". Good riddance to 'em.

This may be of interest to people:

http://news.bbc.co.uk/2/hi/uk_news/politics/electi...

It's the news report on accident statistics from Swindon following the removal of speed cameras. Accidents actualy went down slightly if you look at the stats they quote in the article.

I don't think I've managed the A415 junction to M4 in under 8 minutes for a long time wink

It is amazing how these were hailed by those who are now slashing the funding when they got the cash. If ever more proof was needed these were for money and not safety here it is. The SCP must all be fearing that this is going to spread far and wide.

I am just waiting the usual comments from Brake and the trotting out of sadly bereaved parents to try to prove a point, but no amount of tear jerl journelisum will hide the facts here.

That's not the Daily Mail attitude! One bereaved relative with their photo in the newspaper means far more than a statistic showing a hundred bereaved relatives.

I've noticed a big reduction in scamera vans lately. Bloody great stuff! party

Hopefully this will reduce paranoid behaviour displayed by perfectly innocent motorists who happen to pass any old van in a layby and panic brake. rolleyes
