I put this in GG since it is the cars not the bikes who will get annoyed or see it as acceptable ,depending.

If the traffic is stopped and a bike filters down the center of a two lane road that is fine. If the traffic is moving at 20 mph that is fine? 40? 50? 70?

Where is the cut off in your opinion?

One Friday evening before a Bank Holiday Monday, I was among three lanes of the westbound M4 all doing a steady 65, evenly spaced and in good humour. A bike went through us easily twice as fast as we were going. He wasn't filtering, he was using us as markers in a slalom. It was daylight, visibility was good and the road was dry but I thought at the time he was going a bit too quickly and expected to go round the next bend and find a smouldering heap of dead biker. There wasn't and he got away with it, but there's no denying he was relying on everyone else for his own safety.

By "wrecklessly" you mean safely, without crashing and wrecking things scratchchin

If there's enough room, vroooooooooom. wink

If it's a bit tight mirrors take flight.

One a more sensible(ish) note I filter if it's safe to do so and not over solid white lines (unless theirs a clear view ahead). Wave to drivers courteous enough to move left and middle digit those who try to ram us off the road or pull to the right.

I used to refer to the 8:00 ride up the M3 into London as the death star run, felt like the cars were out to get you. never indicate, pull into the other lane if they see a gap etc etc

I reckoned speed of the traffic plus about 20 - 25% more was safe, anything above that and my view is you aren't giving the cars a sporting chance to see you.

I have no problem with motorbikes filtering sensibly, however a couple of months ago I was in a queue of traffic on the A23 when a couple of quad bikes filtered down between the two lines of traffic. The second one was also quite wide and the traffic had to part slightly to let them through, they shouldn't be allows to filter IMO.

When there's a sensible speed-differential in slow traffic - no problem at all.

When they're racing through, with no time to react if a car shifts position in-lane or a dozey twonk moves without looking/indicating, then they're being stupid.

When the speeds pick up (say 30-40mph+), then it should almost be 'with consent' - I'll make a point of moving to the side of my lane and leaving room front-and-back for them to slalom around me. Anything else is just silly.

30-40mph on a motorway? Surely not. I average more than that over the whole journey biggrin

About town perhaps, yes.

Disagree with this bit. 95% of people don't even notice that I have filtered when I'm half a mile in front of them. Bu99er waiting for them to say OK biggrin

Might agree with the stop when it becomes an addiction post above though hehe

Surely it then becomes 'undertaking'? (In every sense of the word!)laugh

From most of the riding I see it's not surprising bikers' accident statistics are so bad.
