Right

I'm doing regular jaunts from Essex to Blackburn (260 ish miles each way) and its getting a bit grating in the Ibiza.

So I need a new car (who doesn't), I can probably scrape together about 4k and I was thinking about various cars but now I've come across the old new shape vectra.

And on price alone its pretty compelling, reasonable mileage, apparently good at long distances etc.

So PH what do you think, madness?

The 150 cdti SRi is not a bad hack and the only one i would now pick , just dont get a standard sprung vectra , the damping is all to pot , and you would be in more control bareback riding a pissed tramp, than guiding an ls spec vectra down a b road.

Surely a Mondeo is a better driver? actually, aren't they just better all round? in fact there are few cars I want less than a vectra

I've owned both and for motorway journeys the Vectra wins hands down (although the mondeo is far from bad!) The mondeo wipes the floor however when it comes to handling. The mondeo is also a nicer place to sit although I prefered the seats in the Vectra for long distances.

The mondeo was quite unreliable whereas the vectra never let me down.

I'd pick the Vectra!

Indeed,

Sadly at this time I need a car that can I can step into at 4am and step out and do a presentation/meeting at 9am and not feel like a zombie.

Handling is not a priority atm, cruise control, some semblance of power and comfy seats are.

Eh? They were all new at one point and now they're all old. Which one?

Thirsty I'd imagine!

What about a nice Mazda6 or Accord?

That sort of car- be it the Vectra, Mondeo, 406/7, Laguna, Accord etc are all designed just that prupose, so they will all actually be fine.

And as this is pistonheads we should talke about "the most fun" car with the biggest engine, but on a long, regular joruney a la sales rep, you want good comfy seats, good stereo, lots of toys, airocn etc and a sat nav if not already.

Other ideas: how about a Volvo S40? Some of the best seats I have ever sat in, and very quiet

The S40 of circa 4k leaves me a little cold tbh, the S60 with the pro logic stereo on the other hand....

When I have been in these as taxi's the driver told me about the fun of dual mass flywheels on the dervs. Probably a perfectly good car for runs up and down motorways.

God,

I thought I hit a low buying the ibiza, comforting myself that it was just so the misses could pass her test.

But actually considering buying a vectra, what have I become

9-3 is indeed very comfortable. The bog standard 1.9TiD doesn't feel that slow either. Just not sure how reliable they are.

S60 is a very nice car, definitely worth a look. Not sure how many are around for that price though.

So what? It's not going to win any friends on here, but you have decided on a £4k budget and need a car as a means to an ends. You could get some ropey E46 BMW and look the kiddy to your petrol head mates and just end up shovelling money at it because they are not reliable. As long as it does what you want it to do that's all that matters.

To sum up:-

vectra = big distances = backache in a can

you speak wise words, It's just a small shallow part of me can't quite pull the trigger.

I can't afford the car I'd like, a Mazda 6 MPS
