Hi All,

I have a house renovation ahead of me and I'm thinking of getting a large estate for obvious reasons.

The following criteria:

1. Large
2. 1k max budget
3. Reliable
4. Cheap to run
5. Ability to sell on afterwards

My thoughts were:

1. 1994-96 vintage A6 estate
2. 1994-1996 vintage Volvo 850

Then I got thinking about

1. VW sharon/Ford Galaxy and taking the seats out?

Any other suggestions, diesel would be preferable.

Volvo 940 estate, or a W124 Mercedes E-class estate.

Both massive, both very reliable, both easy to sell on.

Would the W124 be in budget?

Id say an A6 or 850 are pretty good bets! An Omega might be worth a look!

For £1k you need something simple and uncomplicated that's unlikely to surprise you with potential big bills - have you thought about a Ford Transit, I don't think one that's MOT'd and roadworthy is likely to drop any value from that and you'll always find a buyer.

My guess is that at a £1000 it would be quite ratty. Mine was £1800, and while cheaper ones are out there, they can be rusty or 60% eaten by the family dog smile

Was looking for the same (although for different reasons) and settled on either a Volvo 850/v70, Peugeot 406 or a Fiat Marea.

Saab 9-5

You'd probably get an old Subaru legacy or Mitsi Galant for that kind of budget smile

There must be loads of stuff around at that sort of pricepoint. Pug 405s and 406s are both very roomy. Volvos, obviously. I used to fit a surprising amount into the back of a Mk 3 Golf estate - and cheap as chips.

If it were me, I'd throw caution to the wind and get a Jeep Cherokee with as much MOT as I could find.

4.0 petrol, probably not economical enough.

I need to get around 30 mpg if I can

IceBoy

Fiat Marea...what is that?

You will certainly pick up an omega for this money, probably find a 2.2 for that money now (good compromise between economy and power). Look for rot under the door where the rubber seal has a push fit into the door body.

At this end of the market though luck will play a part no matter what you buy.

Vauxhall Omega 2.5TD estate. Very reliable and not as sort after as Volvo so more likely to get a decent one for the money.

Thing is though, if building renovation is the job then why buy something that's nice? As long as it starts and stops safely, that's all you need.

The Volvo 940 estate is truly humongous inside.

We're in the same situation.

Bought a Honda Accord Aerodeck in February for £300.

170,000 miles
No history or receipts
1 key
2 bald tyres
1 rusty exhaust

Factor in a few hundred quid to put right and it hasn't let us down yet!

(Looking forward to the cambelt snapping)

If you're handy with the spanners and in the southeast our old 850 is in the classifieds needing some TLC (well, quite a bit in fact!).
