I'm buying a new car and can have it in less than 3 weeks time but would you wait a further 3 weeks for the new reg to come out?

I will have to give them my px in a few days so will not have a car for 5 weeks.

What would you do?

I'd stop being a plate snob. Are you buying a car or something to show off to the neighbours?

I think it would probably depend on what it is and if you intend to sell it on in a few years time.

If you think you could relieve some of the depreciation incurred at resale from having the later reg then go for it and wait.

Have you got anything else to drive about in for now?

Thanks, yes that is a concern - but does it make much difference.

It is not a particularly expensive car anyway and I don't know whether at resale that 6 weeks difference is regarded as no different to 6 months?

Really, when you intend to sell it and its value at the time would make the most difference. Also whether you intend to trade it in at a dealer or sell privately. To a dealer it would more than likely mean diddley squat but to a private buyer buying a relatively new second hand car it could make all the difference between them going for the slightly cheaper option or paying a little more for yours.

This is all hypothetical obviously. Personally, even though I know otherwise and because its easier to generalise as such, I tend to consider a '59' plate car registered on the 1st September and a '10' plate car to be registered 1st March. Whether it makes a difference to most I don't know but I would probably pay that little bit more for the 'newer' car.

Horses for courses I suppose hehe

Uhhm good points.

I think I will have it sooner rather than wait a further 3 weeks as i have my 41 year old MG to use for a 35 mile trip every day and it can be a bit tiring to drive in modern traffic, covering the brake pedal, waiting for the perfect chance to overtake etc.

It's not jealousy, you could be buying a frigging Perodua for all I know. I just don't understand the obsession you UK mainlanders have with the latest registrations or sticking a really old plate on so people don't know your car is more than 3 years old. It's crazy. I really win we would adopt a system like RoI, year on the plate, no stupid contrived private plates.

Where's the whoosh parrot gone? If you put the year on the plate (which is there...hence 57 or 08) people prefer to buy the newer year car as they believe it's newer and therefore less likely to brake down. Would you or would you not pick a 2009 car over a 2008 car if all other items were identical?

I'd wait. When people scan ads to buy cars they'll consider buying a 08 over a 57 because it seems like it'd be newer.

But in this case it's the same year, ie, 07 Vs 57. There will always be a new plate, you could wait forever! the only time I would wait is when you are very close to the latest new one which you are.

Yes but that doesn't matter. People will always prefer to buy the one that appears newer. So for a few weeks wait he'll get a car that's easier to sell later on. Perception IS reality. People perceive 57 to be better value than an 07, therefore it's worth more/easier to sell later.

Well, all good points - thanks.

I have however, decided to have the car on a 10 plate.

When I do come to sell it will be clearly advertised as registered August 2010 and have a dateless plate so it is unlikely to sway anyone viewing unless they were to do the math and realise the plate will not be a 60 by date wink

Anyway, I'm going to be keeping it for ages hehe

I'd wait for the sake of 3 weeks unless the delaer is offering a better deal to reg in August ?

It should yield more at resale as people will alwyas want the newest reg....

I did this on the last car I purchased new even though on Sep 1 it came out of the showroom with my private plate on it.....
