Hey all.I have a bit off a headscratcher of a problem regarding a Mk5 Golf GTI. I have seen 2 cars, both in red but both with pros and cons.

CAR A. 06 plate. 53k. 1 owner. BMW dealer selling @ 10,995. This particular car is MINT. not a mark on the wheels or bodywork save a couple of very very minor chips on the leading edge of the bonnet.I am a fussy beggar and this car really did shout out that it had been meticulously maintained.

CAR B. 05 plate. 37k. VW Dealer selling @ 10450 .Owners(unsure as just looked it over on forcourt). this car has a fair few less miles and would take at least 2 years to reach car A's 53k as i dont do many miles per annum. The bodywork on this car has numerous stonechips on several panels and a 3 inch scratch above the drivers door handle.Wheels are in mint condition.overal it looks its 2005 age in terms of stonechips and defects.

What would you go for if you were holding the folding? Thanks guys

Car B, and spend a couple of hundred sorting the paintwork out?

Might be worth adding a poll to your thread.

B - Try and get the repair work included in the price. I wouldn't worry about the number of owners unless its had more than 3 or 4.

EDIT: Just realised A is an 06, so I'd take that one I think. See if you can move them on price though like the second poster suggested.

EDIT 2: Do either have any warranty? I guess the VW dealer one should come with 12 months but not sure if BMW would offer that? That would swing it for me.

Or get the best of both worlds with something like this - http://search.autotrader.co.uk/es-uk/www/cars/VOLK...

56 plate so it would be the 2007 spec

£10.8k/ 29k miles

Car A. Buy a car on condition, not milage. The first car has clearly been cherished if it's in such good nick, in the case the second car, it's possible that the owner mearly saw the car as a tool.

He may be right though.

Do you get the "imagine" with a VW or is that only available with an Audi?

ps; Car #1, but knock the price. Never ignore your instinct.

If you aren't doing many miles, then why would 16k more on the car make a difference? It's not like cars all fall apart at 75,000 miles these days, things have improved since the 70s! As others have said, go on condition not milage.

You obviously haven't driven a Peugeot 307 lol.

I was more bothered by the miles come resale time more than anything thats all.

A, but maybe let them know you've seen another on in good condition for a bit less at a VW dealer. Might get you places, who knows?

Although if the dealers are anything like they are in marsh barton in exeter, then they all know exactly what's on each others forecourts. Actually, car A wouldn't even be on a BMW forecourt, they'd of traded it for a BMW from VW somewhere.

Indeed I haven't.

If you aren't doing many miles a year then come resale time the milage would still be relatively low on either one. At worst the difference in resale value between the two would probably be about the same as the cost of getting the lower milage cars general condition up to that of the tidy higher milage car, non?

Not that I'd ever buy a Golf, but on the options provided, I'd definitely go for A, but as 10PS said, try to knock off some money.

This. When you sell you'll be doing so at say 55k miles rather than 75k miles. Regardless of what people on here say about condition vs. mileage, the vast majority of the (uneducated) general public still don't like cars with over 60k on the clock. You'll get more of your money back and it will sell quicker.

How do you know that Car A has not just been through the tarting up process anyway?

Whichever you buy please haggle hard for cash. Know the price you want to pay based on other cars you've seen and talk it through with the dealer. That said, I'd be going private anyway.

Tell me, how you 'meticulously maintain' a GTI? I have one and it has lots of stone chips, and IME these come from motorway cruising (paintwork is quite thin/cheap on these cars).

So car A has been driven/thrashed on lots of short journeys. Car B has done lots of motorway driving. I'd take car B.
