Garage taking the mick?
Discussion
My GF has an '04 Golf, it is the bog standard 1.4 and is n ow looking rather battered!
It has recently developed a slight rasp, pretty obvious an exhaust fault of some sort so took it today to the local, independant garage.
15 mins later he comes back with the good news, it's the section of the exhaust that is connected to the CAT and will cost ~£550 after fitting. As the pipe in question is flexi it will be possible to bodge it but it may only last 1/2/6/12 months, this was quoted at £75.
All good so far, he then went on to say there are absolutely no non-VW parts and that he has looked "everywhere".
I decided to ring the local VW specialist, a fantastic garage which I've used myself in the past, 10 mins later I've a quote for £250 inc fitting for a pattern part. He did stress that 99% of the time the fit is spot on but occasionally there may a slight knocking, this I could live with.
Was the original garage trying it on slightly or simply providing a 'quality' service by only quoting for genuine, I guess I'll never really know. To be given the choice would have at least been nice!

It will depend on the supplier they use, some of our suppliers will have had so many problems with returns on pattern parts they refuse to stock them so quote for genuine only, rattling can sometimes lead to heat transfer too, so be careful! If you want to send me a message with the reg. number i can look it up and let you know what the options are.
We fitted a pattern catalytic convertor to a Skoda Fabia, never again. The lambda probe hole wasn't in the right place and we had the customer back every month with the engine light on due to a catalyst efficiency fault code.
A genuine VW part should have a 2 year warranty, the pattern part will have 1 year at best.

I'm trusting the VW specialist in this case, if they say they have had no problems then I will go pattern, if they steer me away then it will either have to be the bodge or the genuine VW.A genuine VW part should have a 2 year warranty, the pattern part will have 1 year at best.
I've just fitted a pattern front pipe-and-cat to a Scenic, it was an inch shorter than the one i took off. Ordered another one and it was the same. The pattern pipe was cheap and the lady doesn't want to pay any more. Unfortunately the broken pipe that i took off was only a little more than 12 months old, which may be correct given how easy it was to remove.
The shorter pipe means that the rubber hangers at the rear of the exhaust are now fully stretched forwards.
Hmm.
