I have just watched this video for the 5th time and I love the sound of the car and the engine.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=53c6o_cNPEo

However my car has a fantastic sound but like the car featured like's to drink. Is there any recommendations for a great sounding engine in a sweet driver's car that can be flogged and not empty the bank?

A 6-pot M3 or 330i sound good and are quite economic for what they are.

EDIT-

IN BEFORE 300HP/TON:

American V8 engined cars will get 25mpg or more on a long run too.

330i!!!! The same engine in a z4 sounds better though, different exhaust, maybe I should invest in one...

Fiat-Alfas MultiAir engines are pretty special in this respect.

A bit of a sweeping generalization, if I may be so bold.

Most 5 cylinder 20v's sound nice & aren't half bad on petrol.

Lol!

The vw 3 pots are dismal on economy...
The cosworth four cylinder in my old merc is good for the level of petroly performance and only drinks regular unleaded. Most things small highly tuned and n/a are not too bad. A lot will depend on gearing as well. Modern turbo stuff is okay, performance and/or older turbo stuff can be poor especially driven hard. Seemingly one of the best is the new turbo 1.6 in the Cooper s, 207 and rcz - but then it's only a 1.6 and probably feels it off boost, although straight line performance is strong.
Bmws with a manual box don't seem bad, although personally I think bragging about mpg is new 'bhp in the pub' talk... And it's even easier to BS!

Yup. Light ish, aerodynamic Corvette will get really good mpg/hp, a slab fronted SUV weighing three times as much will not.

The 3 litre straight six in my 2007 Z4C (N52?) sounds absolutely glorious whether at 1500rpm or 7,000 rpm, produces 265bhp and yet weighs very little (total car weight 1380kg). It'll easily run into the 155mph limiter and accelerate from 30 to 70 in under 5 seconds.

mpg wise I can get over 40mpg treading carefully :-)

A great combination of talents :-) It's probably my favourite modern engine.

In my defence I rushed that line in so I could be sure of being "In before 300hp/ton" tongue out

The Ford Colonge engines sound fantastic, and quite economical. Even more so with the 24v Cosworth one.

And as already said, the BMW straight 6's are a good bet.

I'm really enjoying the diesel engine thats in my courtesy scirocco, It's the 2 litre 168bhp unit. Provided the windows are up the in gear induction noise is great, it's got plenty of torque. Over the past 1000 miles it's averaged just over 45mpg. Even when pressing on it will only drop to 35mpg.

After 3 years in an impreza I'm well and truly amazed with how much I'm enjoying driving a diesel boxedin

I found the S54 In my E46 M3 was surprisingly good on fuel, it averaged 23mpg in town and easily cracked 30+ on an easy run

Saying that it was the only economical thing about that car.
