Owned a 2004 V6 one for just over a year. Truly lovely car. So beautiful, got so much attention and the ladies loved it......
BUT....in usual Alfa style it did need constant attention and just didn't feel like it had been built to be driven hard.
The engine was to die for, incredible 3.2 V6. Reasonably quick, quite a shaky chassis, not much feedback from the car. Big brembos were some of the best brakes I've ever used.
I did love it though. Get one, but just be prepared to keep a little spare change for maintenance.

Hmmmm.
Gonna get flamed, but I just don't think the GT is that good a looking car. I have always considered the design to be quite awkward and the interior was not that special (based on the old 155?) The first Alfa I have seen in some time where red doesn't actually suit the car as well (all IMO)
Yes, I have test driven one and thought it was poor dynamically. Went for a 159 saloon instead which I actually think is the best looking car in their range with a far nicer interior (even when compared to the Brera which is wonderful.... until you get to the back).
So, would I buy an Alfa GT? Well, on the basis that Alfa's are a lot better reliability wise than people give them credit for - yes. For exclusivity, yes. On it's looks......

Why would you get flamed, this isn't the lounge. You are wrong though, on the looks. Right about the 159 cabin though.
Lots of Alfa Males on here
Have to agree to disagree on the looks - but I guess life would be boring if.....
The Alfa 159 had the nicest interior of any car I owned. Designed for design's sake, which I found out to my cost soon after picking it up when I discovered that it had nowhere to stand a coffee cup, no little trays for stuff, and the side pockets were practically useless. Strange how you can do without lots of crap when there is nowhere to put it. Lovely car in every respect.
The only GT I would get is the 3.2 V6
I had a JTD 147 for a year and would have gone for the GT next but the performance just wasn't there. It was barely faster than my 115bhp 147 and the 150bhp 147 was miles faster with the same engine!
The interior really lets it down, although they used better plastics and added bits everywhere, it was still the 147 interior which was never as good as the facelift 156 interior which was/is godly.
In the end, like the guy above, I was tempted by the 159 instead which had a nicer interior and as good looking (wouldnt say better). The GT really is Ferrari looks at bargain basement prices.
It will need about £1k worth of maintence every year. Not much by sports car standards, but you wont be getting sports car performance unless you go for the V6! Nice diesels...but still diesels!
I went for an Audi TT in the end, if they had anything with similar power at the same price, I would have stayed! The GT is still a good choice!

I love them. Two of my close family own a GT. One a 5+ yr old JTD that has not suffered with excessive maintenance costs since purchase at about 1yr old. Just make sure you find a garage to work on it that knows how and where to jack it up! The other is a recent Blackline, again a diesel. Interiors share quite a lot with the 147, but i find them a nicer place to be. The seats are particularly comfortable and supportive. In my opinion performance is very similar to the same engined 147's. They are of course very similar cars. The V6 would definitely be my preferred choice, but i doubt you would be disappointed with a diesel or a 2.0 petrol.
The interior is largely shared with the 147, so is attractive enough but not as well screwed together as other current Alfas. I've only driven the 1.9JTD, which was lovely, torquey but surprisingly revvy for a diesel. The JTD is a great engine. As for the chassis, its steering is sharp and pointy but they do tend to get a little wooly as speed increases. Just tell him to buy one
