I've noticed at several manufacturer's used car boards, that everyone seems to be offloading their V8 range. Lexus for example, apparently no longer market the LS460 and are to concentrate on Hybrid vehicles only.

Stocks of used V8 cars in BMW, Audi and Mercedes are equally low as are Jaguar.

I heard recently of some poor bloke who purchased a Chrysler 300C SRT, tried to sell it after six months and no one would touch it - not even the dealers.

It's feasible that if you buy say an LS460, you may be stuck with it for the rest of its/your natural life.

Has anyone else sensed this situation getting worse? My perception is that dealers will rid themselves of V8's and not be slightest bit interested in trading them back at a later stage.

Thanks.

I (partly) share your pessimism, but the M3 and RS4 seem to do well.

A lot of manufacturers seem to be downsizing - look at Audi with the new S4. BMW seem to be going the same way, although they are swapping the V10 for forced induction V8, so it's not all bad news. It's all down to the price of fuel, and the VED on high emissions cars.

Cars emitting over 225g/km and first registered between 1 March 2001 and 23 March 2006 currently fall into band K, which is the last of the "reasonable" bands. The new S4 I mentioned above *just* scrapes into band K. Who knows how long the 2001-2006 immunity will last. If they change that rule, then my Mondeo is going to be band L, which'll be £400+ per year, and I'm willing to bet they'll be pushing that up very rapidly.

Maybe the trick is to buy a pre March 2001 M5, and have fun with that.

I agree that V8s are looking more and more pointless
for an ordinary car these days.

Most 3 litre six cylinder cars will crack 150 mph no problem,
so it seems to me you only need a V8 if you are towing half
the Western world, or you are determined to pay for most
of the NHS yourself.

I give it another ten years before the six cylinder car
is seen as pointless extravagance and we are all piloting
cars powered by nothing stronger than a hair dryer motor.

Except cars aren't getting less powerful. Quite the opposite in fact.

I bought a 5.4 V8 at the weekend.

I already own another (4.0) and am looking for a third (5.7) so there are some buyers about.

Which makes me, as the owner of a car which emmits 224g/km, hopeful they don't change the goalposts!

They're also becoming alot heavier- so there's no net gain.
