High mileage cars

I've been eyeing up a car locally to me, that would suit my purposes very nicely.
However, it's got close to 150,000miles on the clock.
Should I be worried about this in a big way and avoid? I can't seem to shake this stigma in my head that it's going to give me untold trouble and cost me loads of money I don't have.
I know nowadays mileage isn't so much of an issue now, my current car has done 94,000miles without much trouble, but it is a Honda.
How many people out there have had galactic mileage cars and been trouble free, or worse, had loads of grief?

Just so long as it's serviced regularly and well, not been abused, and is generally a solid car in the first place, you should be OK.However, it's got close to 150,000miles on the clock.

There are always exceptions to the rule. I've seen a friend's 21,000 mile 206 give up the ghost massively simply because it was a shoddy car; another friend had one for 170,000 miles (Christ, what pain that must have been) with no problems at all. Our 110,000 mile green Civic went 60,000 miles without a service (!) and it still worked fine (blame other members of the family... not me!).
Put simply... do your research as much as possible. History check, maybe even get the AA to come have a look, ask around forums and see if there are known problems, see how fresh the clutch/cambelt/other expensive jobs are...

check for service history and use your loaf while test driving and you should be fine
as long as they are looked after Volvos are Bullet Proof

Going to check it out tonight so will use common sense and see what's what.
my V40 1.8 is creeping up towards the 150,000 mark with no problems, it starts, stops, tows my trailer and does 35 - 40 mpg
ive done 20,000 miles in it in two and a half years and its cost less than 300 quid in that time (cat and rear discs for the last mot)
its comfy and the heater works great
not bad for a car that cost 200 quid!

I bought an mr2 with 137,000 miles on it and its driving great. Passed MOT with no work needed, not smokey and my mechanic gave it the overall thumbs up as a good purchase (luckily as i'd bought it by then)However, it's got close to 150,000miles on the clock.

Had mine 8 years now, nowhere the milage you are looking at, but in my view, smashing car. What year is it out of interest?Only thing which has gone, and I wont be replacing is the headlight wiper motor's, at £600 I can live without them.
BTW Volvo labour charges are a tad high me thinks, having said that, always had mine to the local Volvo dealer for servicing/MOT.
I wouldn't worry about the box on a 2.4 petrol personally....
S80s were seriously let down on the electrical side unfortunately, although saying that, my dad had one for 5 years from new and it had no problems at all (quite literally nothing). You have been warned.
If you want a car that has great seats and eats miles, these are very very good for that. Make sure it has half leather half cloth seats, as you may feel like you're sliding out!

A guy here at work has a S80 2.5 Turbo (petrol) with 270k on the clock and still running strong S80s were seriously let down on the electrical side unfortunately, although saying that, my dad had one for 5 years from new and it had no problems at all (quite literally nothing). You have been warned.

OP use your loaf when looking at the car and while test driving it and you will be fine.
I just typed out a nice reply, and work network intercepted it and now I've had to do it again. 
Thank you for the input guys, I think from the feedback here and also elsewhere, as long as it's been taken care of correctly I haven't got worries particularly buying a higher miler now.
But as has been mentioned above, slightly concerned at the idea of selling it on again. But I'm sure if it's priced appropriately, some enterprising person will buy it with the intention of breaking it for parts.
