Right gents, seeing as ive become all sensible, and have a plan to work to, i can no longer afford to run fun and fast cars. So ive decided to switch to something slow, and diesel, what fun frown

Seeing as im going to be going slow, i might as well be comfortable, so a few requirments:

  • Has to be diesel obviously
  • Has to be auto, so i can atleast relax and be lazy
  • Preferably RWD/4WD
  • Have some sort of class/style. Seeing as im not going anywhere quickly, i might as well like the car
  • Be reasonably reliable. I dont mind fixing stuff, just not all the time. Also, i hate doing bodywork, so nothing stupidly rusty
  • Budget is ideally 1k, i can stretch to 1.5k if its lovely
  • And a turbo would be nice, so i can get a cheeky remap
I dont mind stuff that needs work to get it running nicely, but i cant do bodywork, and im only above average with electrics.
So far all i can come up with is a old td 5 series, or some sort of w124 merc.

Anything ive missed?

W124 seems to tick all those boxes, some came without A/C though

edit to add except the turbo ofc

For 1.5k i feel finding an auto RWD diseasel will be a little hard. Did the E36 come in 320d flavour?

It came as the 325td and 325tds... the tds was sort-of respectable, some to be found. There's one for sale on our weird little island, come to mention it.

This could be perfect!

See id like a petrol, i really would, however i live in yorkshire where its just hill after bloody hill frown This kind of negates the ability to cruise at a steady speed, which is why im struggling to crack 22mpg in the 328i right now.

Ive been looking at 535tds' and ive been trying to find a 325tds but they seem even more rare.

A W124 like you want won't be cheap either, a 300D with A/C will command decent money still, probably 2k+ for a saloon and a lot more for an estate. With hilly driving with an auto a W124 diesel would be doing well to crack 30mpg. None of these old style diesel barges are that economical tbh, diesels were pretty crap til the late 90s.

Its a bit dull but I'd look for a Passat TDI with the AFN 110hp non-PD engine. 55mpg possible on a run with these and you can run veg oil.

Also maybe one of these:

Tbh I'd forget the idea of an auto. Auto + economical + old just don't go together.

Have you thought about LPG?

I'm sure you could find an already LPG'd Lexus LS

...seems to fit the bill!

that Omega looks very tidy. Defo has my vote, especially for that kind of money
