A challenging what-car
Discussion
Dear all,
I was mis-sold my car insurance at the beginning of the year, I was told I could put my partner on the policy but I didn't have to spare cash to do so, and when I tried to later they refused to add her. So I need to get a new car. Complicated further by the fact that I am moving to London, the car needs to be reasonable on insurance. My needs are:
- Cheap to insure so low insurance group
- Budget of about £10k (this will also help with insurance)
- Reliable (I am not mechanically minded) and will only be using it sparingly.
- Needs to be able to seat 4 adults with a decent amount of stuff in the boot, so 4+ doors would be helpful too.
- Needs to have a professional image as I will need to visit client sites occasionally.
I liked the idea of a Mk5 Golf GTI but insurance said no. Needless to say I will be moving to another company at renewal time.

Perhaps my username is too subtle a hint at what fuel I put in my car at the moment. It is spelt "diesel" btw.HTH

Good shout on Civic and Octavia though, nice cars.
yes i know. particularly the octavia.another thought was the pleasingly black pump fuelled auris d4d thingy the one with 180 bhp and multilink rear suspension.
it'd be 'okay'. not sure if they're available for £10k
yes they are:

so this with 5 drs and lower mileage...
i bet worse to drive but better to own than some other options.
nice stealthy motorway performance. you could do 100 all day long and get away with it..!

If you love the diesel, and love the space, and want cheap insurance...
Vauxhall Signum 3.0 V6 Diesel.
Can pick up a bloody good condition one with about 20k miles for £7k, meaning the other £3k would cover your fuel and insurance for the year!
It only has 4 seats, but has immense boot space, and an Elite spec has full heated leathers, cruise control, built in colour sat nav, tinted windows, everything you can want; some will have the travel assistant in the back of the car which is a mini-fridge, arm rest and has 2 standard plug sockets for laptop etc. Design spec has sports suspension, nicer wheels and a few extras.
The rear seats are as adjustable as normal front seats, slide forward back and recline, and also fold absolutely flat meaning you can fit literally a medium sized wardrobe in the back.
The V6 diesel has a good mpg and is rather sporty, but because of the unknown-ness of the signum the insurance is cheap.
I was only paying £1500 being a 19 year old male with 0 NCB driving the 2litre turbocharged petrol one!
