With VAT about to soar to 20% would like to suggest all car owners buy their parts from private sales in their local or regional paper or other advertising mag to save on cash - namely VAT which is expensive enough already. Also have you noticed that when you get a minor service they check more or less the same as they do when you get an MOT so you end up paying twice for the same checks. We pay enough already so any more money saving tips welcome as most of us are gonna be worse off in 2011.

Great idea!

Instead of buying from a motor factors or main dealer we can spend hours, days or weeks scouring the small ads in the search for a specific part that some bloke might have discovered at the back of his garage.

Out of interest, which planet are you visiting from? rolleyes

I didn't notice when they dropped the VAT by 2.5 % but then i wasnt spendin £50 quid every week as I do now to fill up the car and they did't take the VAT down on fuel so there was no difference. Suspect you will notice a big difference come January thr. As fou scouring small ads I always owned old cars up until a few years ago and never had any problem getting any part from Scotads or car mart publication as didnt ave the cash to buy new. Did this for 15 years and always found what I wanted.

The oil, coolant and brake fluid will be checked on the MOT, but unlike a service there is no requirement to replenish them. They will be used as a basis for refusal to test or fail the car. So if you want to save time and money check them yourself.

I don't think they are. As long as the brakes work, it passes.
