When I ran two cars, it was fairly simple to work out insurance. I commuted mainly in one (insurance in my name) and the other was left at home for weekends and for the wife to use while I was at work (insurance in her name).

Now we have 3 cars. Getting insurance quotes for the new one seems a bit of a nightmare as apparently the fact I have 5 years NCB with my current policy means nothing, as I can't use it simultaneously. If I buy a new policy, can I begin to accumulate NCB on that, so say next year (barring any claims) I'll have 6 years NCB on one car, and 1 year NCB on this one?

The only other way I can think of doing it is a classic policy, but I'd like to be able to commute in both the cars at some point, and classic policies don't generally allow for commuting.

Oh, and Admiral multicar is just as expensive as getting a new policy with no NCB...

You can, yes. This is the way to do it unless you can find an insurance company who will mirror / take into account your NCB - which is rare.

You can't also combine/split NCB, it's always for example 6 on one car, 1 on the other.

When I first bought my MX-5 I went with Admiral Multicar who were cheap. But once I started modifying it, this cheapness disappeared. It always seems to be pretty cost-effective when you're insuring more than one standard car though in my experience.

If you have a decent record (regarding claims or convictions) you should be able to get a reasonably cheap third car quote from your existing main insurer.

Or talk to Adrian Flux. They quote good rates on limited mileage use by car club members.

No claims, no convictions.

Adrian Flux just quoted DOUBLE what I got from Confused.com (which is still too much).

I use Competition Car Insurance for the MX5 and they were good enough to mirror my NCD from my other car across even though it's not insured by them.

Cheaper than any multicar policy I could find, no problem with mods and track days included; what more could you ask for?

What car is it? Commuting was an option when taking out my MG's policy with Footman James.

1991 Mazda Eunos Roadster (MX-5)
2002 Skoda Octavia vRS
1988 Peugeot 205 GTI
1994 Peugeot 205 Rallye

That's the current stable, Rallye is going soon and GTI will be insured by the missus.
