A close friend of mine is very ill and probably hasn't got long left, his wife asked me to sell firstly his car which luckily went very smoothly to a very good independant dealer (found via PH) but now she has asked that I sell his bike. With the car it was easy I told the dealer the story, they wrote a bankers draft out in my friends name and I signed the V5 on his behalf job done. The potential problems with the bike however are that it is the intention to try and sell it privately to obviously try and realise as much value from it as possible (it's an 09 Hayabusa), the V5 isn't in my name or address, payment will probably need to be made to his next of kin, and well I guess the risks for a buyer are considerable as although the story is true it's far from normal and people are always scared of a scam. So I guess the question is, is it worth it? Will the difference in what I get from a dealer (if I can find one that is buying in stock) be negated by having to sell it privately slightly cheaper because of the circumstances?

Just tell the potential buyer the same story. If they want to look, tell them to view it at his house with his wife present etc. Atleast then the addresses will match.

What if he signs the V5 / ownership over to you?

Alas I don't think there's likely to be any signing of anything going on right now, he really is poorly with enough on his plate.
