Low mileage 2008 Kia Ceed or older 'premuim' hatch ??
Discussion
Hi, as per the title really.
We need a workhorse car to last a long while and a lot of miles, had a 2001 focus 2.0 zetec for 7 yrs and 100,000 miles and it has been great and 100% reliable. However it now needs almost as much spending on it as it is worth (4 tyres, cambelt, wheel bearing, major service, mot etc!
We were not really bothered about image as it is just a second car but needed a lot more economy as the focus is costing £300+ a month in fuel since my wife changed jobs and now does 90 miles a day
Musts were ; deal done quickly due to time constraints, purchase from a franchise dealer as I have no time or want to sell privately, dealer warranty (not third party crap), car to be imaculate, economy and dependability, focus sized with 5 doors and not too slow
So we looked at Ford, VW, Toyota and Skoda but I felt all the used stock was overpriced and generally very poor condition. Then looked at Kia Ceed's, we were offered a decent P/X against a 2008 Ceed LS 1.6D 113bhp model with 12000 miles, it was going to be serviced, was imaculate and drove very well and would come with the balance of the 7 yr warranty plus 0% finance over 3yrs.
Been having second thoughts though, should I go for a slightly higher mileage or older Golf, focus, Auris etc and spend the same but sacrifice the warranty and the attractive finance deal?
I don't know anybody who owns or has owned a Kia and am not sure what it will be like as a long term purchase????

We have an i30, which is a Cee'd with nicer suspension and shorter warranty. It's a good car, no complaints at all. Ours is a 1.4 108PS, and with less than 800 miles on the clock it's already getting 40.8mpg on average.
Only issue I have with it is the rubbish Hankook Optimo tyres that are factory fit. 800 miles on the clock, easy driving, and there's over 1mm of tread gone off the front tyres already. Looks like it'll need front tyres before it's first service, which is crap. Poor grip, even worse wear, nothing at all like the Hankook Ventus Prime I run on the Mondeo.

After years of having Golf's my brother moved to an Astra a couple of years ago and in the last couple of months a Cee'd.
He seems ptretty non-plussed with the Cee'd to be honest and says the Cee'd is "OK" but his Astra was "nicer to drive" and that he wished he had gone for a Hyundai i30.
Not sure how much help that is but my summary is that the ownership experience should be painless with the Cee'd but that you are likely to be underwhelmed by the car.

The Ceed is an excellent car as an indestructible family hack. It has independent multi-link rear suspension and is actually rather better to drive than some of it's more expensive competitiors. Servicing is cheap, and the warranty is obviously amazing. The LS is also rather well equipped.
If it was a car for the wife, and I wasn't going to be driving it, and my primary concerns were buying a "fire and forget" car that would cost me a fixed amount, then a Kia C'eed is a good bet, as they have proved reliable and they have a long warranty.
If I was going to be spending a lot of time in the car, then I would definately go for a older "premium" model as the driving dynamics are far superior and the engines are more powerful, and thats what matters to me, and I would budget and accept any problems that came along as part of the tradeoff.

Says who ? I had a drive in one and its much worse than a Mk5 Golf, Lexus IS, Latest Focus, Audi A3, etc etc etc. I have to admit, I bought a Kia recently, but I bought a 500£ 2001 Shuma as a workhorse car and its been reliable if a little thirsty, dull and slow...personally I think anyone who its thinking of spending that much money on a new Kia is certifiable.
