...walking back to my MX5 earlier from the pub with my two mates and my car is the first we get to.....just as we slow and i get my keys ready a girl who is stood on the pavement (there is a cellar bar adjacent to where im parked) says to her mate "that's a proper hairdressers car"

...best bit is she didn't realise it was mine...so i quipped "well, i am a hairdresser..." (i'm not by the way) and she was hugely apologetic and didn't realise it was my car...

Anyway the next 5 or so minutes was basically my two mates winding her up and the 3 of them throwing abuse it my car....imagine every hairdresser/MX5 related joke and quip you can imagine!!

I realy thought it was quite amusing and laughed with them....my mates chariots are a Puma (very manly) and an oil burning Golf...

Needless to say i'm sure i enjoyed my drive home more than either of my mates biggrin

I was interested in SLKs, and someone referred to them as "hairdresser cars". I couldnt come close to affording the insurance on one at the moment, but 2.0L petrols and up, RWD 2 seater, short wheelbase, you could have some awesome fun in a car like that. Why do RWD 2 seaters qualify as "hairdresser cars"? Why don't Elises get the same stick? The sparse interior too much to handle for the ladies?

Whatever, sign me up as a hairdress, I love MX5s and SLKs.

I've seen some women in Lotus Elises. A famous one is that violinist Vanessa Mae - shes a big fan of them.

I think generally small, cute, pretty convertible cars are known as hairdressers cars . If you think about it mostly this is Mazda MX5 and Mercedes SLK. Toyota MR2s can sometimes be called girly as well, but its only been around in ragtop convertible form for one generation. Look at the MKII Toyota MR2 - thats how a man's car should look... aggressive and wide. This is what Porsche tried to do with the new Boxster and lose the cuteness.

I would define a hairdressers car as style being the priority over substance, eg. Ford StreetKa. Anything that is RWD with some decent performance cannot be a hairdressers car.

I've seen two or three round my way in the last few days that have quite obviously been set up for fast road/track use, don't think I've ever seen one park outside a salon though.

hehe

My comment was totally in jest - I have no idea why I put it actually.

Just thought the Micra CC would be some sort of 'gay icon' like car.
