Need some info on these please guys i posted up a week or so ago looking for a daily drive to replace my old volvo v40 and have been looking at these for about a week or so now.

Been looking at late 90's - early 00's cars with a few engines maily being petrol v6 units the 2.6 and 2.8 also the 1.8T can any one advise any snags that crop up on these cars engines most of the cars i have been looking at are over 100k and i dont want to spend much more than £1000-2000 max on them or is this a bad idea to go for one of these. I dont do many miles a year at the most 10k a year but 3-5k of that is in the TVR but hoping they will do around 30mpg normal driving?.

Cheers any help is greatfull

Check electricals are all working. I had a 1.9tdi on a 1999 T plate, it went mad as the vaccum pump in the boot and brain got water damaged.
Otherwise a very strong car.

Check Haldex oil in the 4x4 diff has been changed regularly.

I had a 3.0.

Terrible fuel comsumption, averaged 20mpg on combined cycle.

Was a torsen system though, not the haldex. Needed a power steering pump at 100k miles, other than that, never really let me down. Was a 53 plate though, and i sold it for a lot more than £2k, so tbh i'm not being that helpful.
Was your car on the strathy web site IIRC?

If you're going for FWD then avoid the multitronic gearbox, plenty of threads on that.

I rekon you would get 30mpg from the 2.6 and 2.8 V6... I have the B5 S4 and I get about 23-24 mpg but most of my driving is round town and it has two turbos which drink petrol for a laugh!

Good cars, I have had a few issues with mine recently mainly being related to the turbo system. The manifold were rattling due to poor design and in order to replace them you have to take the engine out and when the engine was out i had the turbos inspected, it was found that they needed replacing too. Obviously you wont have turbo issues.

They did a facelift in late 1999 early 2000 removing washer jets from the bonnet and putting one piece headlights on and a few other bits and bobs. You may prefer one to the other.

I recognise your username, and i know of a guy called Scott that stays cambuslang way that used to have a jag same as the one in your profile, but he had an AX for the track as well as a couple of other things i think. Crossed wires.

Anyway, with my 3.0, and apparently the 1.8T's, coil packs can be an issue, not the most expensive part, but if you need all 4 of them (or 6), it adds up.

Solid cars though imo, mine was on over 100k when i sold it on, on all original bushes and dampers, and it still felt tight.
Ah thanks for the info

I have seen your username on strathy before and recal you had a audi.

engines and drivetrain are pretty much bullet proof if serviced properly.

Wishbone bushes will be saggy if not changed within last 4 years or so.

Buy as powerful one as you can, the standard 1.8T (160bhp) was a bit cack in quattro form as it needed to be on boost. If you drove it normally then you might as well have bought a 2wd version as you really werent getting the benefits at those sort of power levels.

I have a 3.0i A6 quattro now (31mpg average on a motorway drive to notts of about 120 miles each way) and get about 23mpg average in London traffic.

My experience of the a4 quattros is owning an 04 1.8T 190 S-Line Q and an 06 2.0TFSI 220 s-line Q

Had a R reg A4 2.8 bought with 155k on and sold two years later with 177k on. Paid £1250 and traded it it against another car for £1500. Never let me down changed oil every 6k was and still is one of the best iv owned. Look for red dampers as this was a sign of factory sports suspension and it handled fantastic . Mine avg 26mpg
Had a 90 Q as well and bought thay with 130 and sold with 150 on and that was the same
Bullet proof if looked after

As above regarding the electrics. Notorious for lots of alarm/centre locking faults. Used to scan these all the time with vagcom and it always showed at least 7 alarm/central locking faults alone. Mate had a B5 1.8T Sport - his chewed a steering rack at about 80k. Not sure if it's a common issue though.

Other than that it was a fantastic car, he still regrets selling it. Quick, quiet, comfy and looked nice in Kingfisher blue. I'm considering one myself for my £2k budget car.

bought a 99 2.5tdi quattro. must admit the handling was still there and in the wet it was exceptional but the brakes were a bit wanting. had to replace all the engine gaskets as it was dripping oil which apparently is not an uncommon problem. also lost reverse (automatic) for a week and had to have the guys at work push me out of the car park until i could go forward! it came back after a week and even the AA guy couldn't figure out the problem.

the guy i sold it too says it leaks oil now a few months after the oil gaskets/seals were done which is disappointing. shoddy workmanship/bad design i am not sure but the most money i ever spent to repair a car and when the reverse went i lost faith in the car i planned to own for ten years.

would i own one again. er, no. though the quality was sublime. get in a lesser brand after and the comparison is amazing.

As with alot of late 90's/00's onwards VAG stuff, you either get a good one or a bad one.

Buy carefully. Plenty of bad ones about.

I had a one owner, full history 'S' reg 2.8 V6 ('99 model IIRC) (just pre facelift) Quattro, with 94k miles on it.

There was some noise from the drivetrain in 1st / 2nd gear - like a grinding noise. No idea what it was.

Engine was clean and leak free.

The thing had more rattles than a nursery.

On the whole, a nice car though with absolutely fantastic handling. Fuel economy wasn't bad either.

And of course the body is galvanised which keeps rust at bay if you look after it.

The Bose sound system was nice too, as were the heated seats.

I used it over this last bad winter, through December / February. Really held the road well in the snow and ice.

So, overall a nice car, however too many rattles and noisy gearbox / diff / whatever.

I sold it after three months of ownership.

ETA: Another common failing is the plastic trim along the bottom of the doors. The metal clips rust, resulting in the trim dropping off.
