Hi All

I am looking at getting an Mini convertible, the colour choice is not great apart from the metallic blue which Mrs Spunagain has vetoed - "not another blue car!", and so we are tending towards yellow.

Are there any cons of having yellow paint?

I vaguely heard something about it being an insect magnet - does anyone have 1st person experince of this.

Any other comments to help me decide?

I am off so see an interchange yellow one tomorrow....

Thanks

Spunagain

White?

Personally I think only a few makes of cars look good in Yellow. Ferrari and Caterham, Lambo. Its a tricky colour.

Having owned a yellow car I can vouch for the insect phenomenonemenomenom but it's no big thing. They just land on the car and fall off when you drive away. Little black beetles were the worst offenders which strangely enough also infest (while doing no harm) the yellow flowers of a particular plant in my garden.

Some yellows look good, but some are difficult to match.

Bodyshop bod told me he would never try to work with that light VW yellow.

My last car was yellow and drove me mad, dirt shows up very easily bugs get all over it and at least on my car all stone chips on the bumper showed up as black specks due to the under coat and was very noticeable.

Did look very nice straight after cleaning though.

Selling it again would be my concern, that along with looking like a huge Woopsie in a bright yellow Mini convertible.

Unless its for the wife.

The car is to share... but I think my masculinity can cope with being seen in a yellow rag top!

Besides who cares what onlookers think as long as you're having fun!

My race car is bright yellow, never really had a problem until a couple of weeks ago at Silverstone. Just before the race, as I approached the assembly area, I could see the waiting pit crews waiving their arm about. The whole area was infested by a swarm of midges and as I pulled up they all descended on my car (the midges not the put crews) much to my distain and everyone else’s delight. I wish someone had a camera, I could have seen what my car would look like in black!
Occasionally the colour attracts a wasp, but they soon realise glass fibre isn’t that appetising and buzz off.

I know what you mean, it doesnt matter in the slightest, I personally dont really see Gay as being an insult anyway but a yellow Mini Convertible, no thanks, a nice sober coloured Cooper S please but then I am a bit conservative (boring fart) so go for it.

Im very qualified to answer this question.

I "cruised" around in my mums yellow 1.3 micra inspiration for about 18 months after passing my test.

Bugs do love the car so if you like dogging or rural activities id suggest a less brash colour wink.

For me at least the only people it didn't stand out to was the cops what kinda self respecting "naughty" teenager with a car full of mates who may have liked a "smoke" would drive such a bright womens car smile.

To be honest I got more st from owning a red polo and the celica than that.

If you like it go for it.

Not that many yellow cars on the road.

Certainly don't see that many yellow minis either

Sure. It has less colour pigment in it, so it weighs less. While this doesn't improve your engines HP level it does improve your power to weight ratio.

The yellow on New Mini's looks awful. Like a slightly gone-off banana.

(also to add that is an amazing diecast model if it is one)

One of my Lupos is yellow, never had any trouble with insects, but I would imagine matching the paint would be an absolute nightmare if you had to

Not had a yellow car myself but, FWIW, my opinion of them is that it only works when the car shouts louder than the colour.

A repmobile, 307, Focus, and even some soft tops like Z3's, Z4's and SLKs look pants in yellow. I'm not keep on yellow MX5's either.

Lambos, Ferraris, Caterhams (as said) and anything that has an attention grabbing look to it can look the dogs in the right shade of yellow.

Speed yellow? Not a bad colour, can't recall seeing a Box in it but have seen a GT3, which looked great, but a boggo C2 in Speed Yellow just doesn't cut it IMO. Back to that car shouting louder than the colour thing. can see how a Box would do it though with the right colour roof and interior.

As I think someone else has already suggested - Yellow can be a notoriously difficult colour to paint match, especially the metallics which tend to be three coat pearls.

The biggest problem when trying to match it comes down to coat thickness, as the more coats you apply, the darker the shade becomes, meaning local repairs are a no no.

I've seen some absolute horror matches, where a wing or door has been painted and looks like it has been painted in completely the wrong colour - Most bodyshops prefer to blend the paint along the whole length of the car, or in some cases the entire car - This in itself can lead to problems with the paint crazing if the prep work wasn't done properly

Yellow with black interior and roof - looks rather good I think and the wife loves it. Managed to get my 18 year old son insured on it and we are going for a week round France - father/son post A-Level thing driving

I like it when it is a strong yellow and not a washy banana type colour. Having said that, I am biased!

The colour is a bug magnet, but keep it polished and they just slide off anyway.
