Porsche or Alfa GTA?
Discussion
OK, need to gather some opinions here on what I should buy.
Bit of background first: I've been an Alfa and Italian car fanatic for years and owned dozens of them. Ever since I started driving, I've always had a beat-up daily to use for work/kids/general use (Alfa 155 at the moment) and a toy (or 2) in the garage for high days and holidays. I'm currently parting with my beloved E34 M5 and my Alfa Spider has already gone. I've narrowed my next car down to two possibilities and am planning to buy once the M5 sells.
So, its either an Alfa Romeo 147 GTA or a Porsche 928 S4 Auto, budgetting around the £7-8k mark.
I've liked the GTA's since they were introduced and always promised myself I'd have one. The 147 prices seem to have settled down and low mileage nice cars are available for the budget I have. If I hang on to it and keep the miles down for 1/2 years, I ought to get my money back at selling time. Maintenance for them is higher than the twin-spark cars but I'm kinda used to that, having owed a number of Alfa V6's before. Alfas are what I know and I'm tempted to stick with that. Or......
The Porsche 928 was the car I always wanted when I was a kid. I've read all the horror stories about buying the wrong one and all the pub stories from the folk that have never owned one. I know they can be reliable, entertaining GT cars too, but am well aware what they cost if you buy the wrong car. I love the looks, its got two seats in the back for my two young chaps and would work well on trips away, holidays and my bi-annual trek to the Le Mans classic. I'm just utterly petrified I get landed with a £5k bill at service time.
Any previous or current owners of either car on here can give me any tips or advice or even which of the two you would choose and why. What should I budget for maintenance over the course of a year? I suppose it comes down to me sticking with what I know and love by buying the Alfa, or taking a gamble and buying the poster car of my childhood.
I have driven a few examples of both cars and love them, despite the dramatic difference between the two. The 928 is a big, lazy beastie which can be lobbed about the back roads when the mood suits, the GTA is just a little bit mad, not what you would describe as dynamically brilliant, but raises a smile for all the right reasons nontheless. I think both would be suitable as fun weekend cars and have no real bias towards either.
The thoughts and knowledge of the PH collective would be greatly appreciated......
