A CIBY* neighbour has just shown me the fail sheet for his MOT. By the looks of it the real reason was that it's a Zafira so no sympathy there however one of the items caught my eye and was worded to the effect 'windscreen damage in the swept area'. The windscreen is in perfect condition and when asked to explain the tester said it referred to an air freshener hanging from the rear view mirror.

Another fail item, 'Headlights set too low'. In fact set in exactly the same place as they have been for the last five years and exactly how they were set when the same tester issued a pass certificate each time.

Who says blokes don't get PMT?

The air freshener fail is becoming increasingly common.

My 26 year old defender failed it's MOT last week becuase the factory fitted ladder partly obscured the number plate (that had also been there for 26 years.)

Now I got told off for that but he passed the car and told me about it, just remember to take it off when I send it for test now!

I had the headlight aligned too low problem when MOT'ing the Fezza last. It was because they tested the alignment immediatly after jacking the rear of the car up. After a quick drive round the block to settle the suspension all was well.

Hmmmm "headlights set too low"

This was the reason for my van failing its 1st ever MOT just yesterday. It was a big nation chain who are currently offering half price MOT's just £27.43. My sister took it in for me so i wasn't [present. They said "we can set them for you for £12.99...FFS its just turning a screw!!! But not being there and not knowing just what level they need to be set i gave her the go ahead to pay these crooks.

So much for the Half price MOT... £40 it cost me in the end...thats about the going rate. Coincidence? Yeah right!

Sounds like the MOT tester was being a muppet. It's hardly against the rules to simply remove the air freshener and tell the owner not to put it back there.

Tell your neighbour to go elsewhere in the future, there are plenty of testers who have a modicum of common sense and work within the guidlines as set by VOSA.

I know, I use one. Anyone in need of a good MOT station in East Herts/Essex feel free to PM me.

Yeah, well when your MOT over there becomes a proper test, done by a government agency in proper test centres, then you might have a little more to complain about. It'll also weed out stupid fails like a Magic Tree hanging, which is rediculous.

Google for your local council MOT station mate

Each council has one for MOT'ing their own fleet but they must be open for the public as well, they don't do repairs so funnily enough the pass rate is much higher

Ummmmm, I think you've misunderstood me. I'm recommending an MOT station (not the one my neighbour used).

I hate MOT pedantry...
Things that may affect the safety of the car, then yes, obviously they should be noted and failed on accordingly... But an air freshener? Jesus...

My girlfriend took her Audi S2 to be mot'd at a local garage we hadn't used before and they failed it on emissions and the exhaust being 'too loud'. When we went to collect it the tester told me the emissions were 'almost' within the guidelines but he still had to fail it "rules is rules" etc. and also 'in his opinion' the stainless cat-back exhaust was too loud...

I told him the car had a new cat on it within the last 2 years (which it had) and had recently been set up on a dyno so that it was running sweet, not overfuelling or anything like that, plus it was recently serviced, so what the hell else were we supposed to do to get it through emissions? Scrap the car?

I told him I was going to take it elsewhere for a second mot and his parting shot was 'good luck with that'.

The next day after a trip to a sympathetic garage that I had been told about and the car had a nice 12 month mot on it.

In your face pedant dude!

Turns out the IOW council one is the one I used last year. They do repairs. I know, because my car needed £700 worth of them...

I am suprised, are you sure it was a council MOT run centre? My experience has been that I have had to go elsewhere for any repairs as they don't do them

IOW is a funny place though smile

I picked my daughter's 5yr old SEAT Ibiza up from being MOT'd in our village garage and the owner told me "all OK". When I looked it had a fail notice and then a pass.

I asked him why and he said the headlights didn't quite come up to the line on the beam checker, so he'd failed it, tweaked them up, and then passed it on retest. No extra charge for any of this.

I wondered if they just fail wherever possible to keep the numbers up and keep VOSA happy but he said it's absolutely mandatory that they test the vehicle in the condition in which it's presented and note the results.
