Having bought a car in feb the dealer chucked 6 months of tax on for me, which was nice!

I never did receive the v5 and never got any reminders to tax the car, wish expires today. So I called the DVLA on Monday/Tuesday explaining the whole situation and that I needed either a v5 or a reference number so I could tax online.

The lovely girl promised me that I was already the registered keeper and she didnt know why I hadnt had either the v5 or any reminders but would send one out. I made it very clear that I needed it before the weekend and was told it would be here.

So the postie has been and still no V5! mad

So should I expect a fine, or is there some grace period but most importantly how the hell can I tax my car?

Sorry for the essay

This site should help you.

You can tax the vehicle using form V62 (application for replacement V5).

Neither is this:

You've had the car five months and you only chase it up a few days before the tax expires?

That wasnt me,but I do take your point about leaving it rather late! It has been a busy few months and one of those things where I generally didnt remember if I got my v5 or not and expected the reminder. It was only when I was cleaning the car last weekend that I realised the tax was due to expire.

You can download form V62 print it out, fill it in and take it to the post office first thing on Monday.

Obviously that's 2 days late, so just don't use the car until then.

Of course, if the OP had posted this query earlier - the answer would have been of use to him.

That's about all he can do, I'd had a look to see if it could be taxed by filling in a V62 online.
Looks like leaving the car off the road until Monday.

Thanks for your help guys. I'll get down the post office on Monday and sort it out. I didnt post on here earlier as I thought I had sorted it and trusted the DVLA to be true to their word, my first mistake!

The DVLA may have been true to their word - you may have been let down by the postal service.....

This has reminded me, I've had my car 3 months and not had the V5. Got pulled by BIB the other day and it is registered in my name etc, can only assume it's gone missing in the post. Who/where do I call/go to get my logbook?

Same happened to me, didn't receive the V5 however I did receive the reminder for the tax - showing the car is in my name.

I would be worried that I had not received the reminders...

I know Royal Mail are useless, but isn't it odd that the chances of anything with 'DVLA' in the letterhead being lost are so much higher?

Except the fines of course.

To you guys without the V5C (not the V5 anymore) if you still have the new keepers supplement (if not then naughty, you should have kept it) you can use that to apply for a V5C for free, otherwise it'll cost ya.

Bloody hell this sorry story goes on...

I took a completed V62 and the V10 forms into the post office local to me at the moment. The lady advised she cant process it has to be done at the local DVLA office, due to me only having the new ownership slip which is only valid for 2 months. The local dvla office is 30 miles away and although I have use of another car I'm not driving all the way up there today!

Im going to call the DVLA again as the V5c form they promised me is still not here, sheesh I thought they would want my money and it is a good job I dont really need the car this week.
