in the expectation that the contract i have been doing for the last few months will be extended over the winter, I suspect a winter beater will be required - to save the morgan from 500 miles a week on the motorway.

So my requirements are:

cheap to buy - less than 2k
cheap to insure and run
fairly comfortable for the long motorway runs
reliable as is possible at sub 2k prices
ideally able to get 4 bikes (2 adult, 2 kids) together with their owners in - i know I could buy a cycle carrier but by the time ive got my thule racks and cycle bits i'm going to be a few hundred quid in the hole and I could be spending that on the car

off the top of my head I'm thinking

renault kangoo
fiat multipla
5 series estate
e class estate
megane scenic
citroen c5 estate

anything else??

03- Honda Accord estate, over your budget though - One on ebay for £2,995 or best offer.

I saw an N-reg, 306 diesel for sale locally for £490 privately, it looked to be in good nick for the age.

Not quite waht you've specified but I'm sure you could get it for £400 then stick a rack on it.

Bottle of wine as brokerage commission wink

Volvo 850/V70 would be a good bet. All of them are dirt cheap and reliable as anything, I should know, my Dad has had 2 and neither ever let us down. They've also got those lovely 5 bangers which sound nice and pull really well, especially the 2.3 turbo be it a T5, an R or a T5-R. Really good seats too.
