Going to look at another Jag tomorrow. Now i'm pretty sure the guy is a dealer, this is the second XJS i have seen him sell...but only through detective work...

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/1995-JAGUAR-XJ-S-xjs-4-0-CEL...

This car and the other one were both advertised on ebay through a "3rd party" user account (see the linky) 'jaguar-xjs-club' which states the listing is on behalf of the seller and to contact them directly. The mobile number on this current ad is the same as the previous ad...just phoned the guy and it's the same chap. Also in picture 11 you can see another car next to the XJS being photo'd...an XJ40 by the look of it...

The guy said to call him back tomorrow morning to arrange a time to go up and have a look tomorrow afternoon which i plan to do.

I'll ask him tomorrow if he's a dealer...it may just me jumping to conclusions.... My other question is this, what if the location where i go to view the car isn't the place on the logbok and is somewhere a bit odd..i.e. industrial estate etc as the pics suggest?

Feel free to tell me to stop being melodramatic wink

From the info you've posted, he is a dealer. Where there is doubt, there can be no doubt.

Looks great. Buy it before I go mental and take an interest lol. Nice big 6 engine on it.

Edit: fear not I wouldn't as I'm in the market for another 7 series I think, but someone may well as it looks good.

Seems like a dealer. Google his phone number to find other ads.

Few pros and cons. He seems to specialise in these cars, and knows his stuff about them, which is good.

I would be very wary of a trader who pretends not be.

it might be a good car, go and see it and judge it on its own merits, perhaps you could ask him outright when you there. I wouldn't ask over the phone as he will probably be defensive, and you wont see the car.

Call him and say 'I'm calling about the car' - see if he asks 'Which one?'

I wont ask over the phone in the mornng if he's a trader but i will when i see him in person.

Is the car being sold by the person named on the V5, and from the registered address?

If not, why not?

Good thought.

I have known a couple of salesmen who work in dealers, and sell the odd part exchange on the side.

Maybe this guy works in a Jag dealer, buys the odd P/X direct from his customers, which his employer will not be happy about. Then sells it on.

My main point is, none of this speculation means it is a bad car.
If he does not pay his tax, or avoids his liabilities whatever.
Trying to catch him out with clever questions does not really achieve anything, we already know he is some kind of dealer. The OP wants to buy a car and this one fits his requirements.

Go and see the car and judge the car on its own merits then decide if the sellers status is important to overall situation.

If (big if) as I have suggested he does work for a main dealer, he has the opportunity to cherry pick the odd nice car that is in his budget, (a few grand I would guess) it probably makes his cars some of the nicest examples for the price you are likely to find.

Avoiding having to bear the brunt of warranty work required. Nothing bad about that if you are only selling a few cars a year. Having to set up as a dealer would make the car more expensive, but not a better car.
Like myself....I buy a few old BMW's and Mercs (semi classics)and restore them, use them for a while and then move them on to pay for the next project. Setting up with all the red tape would stop me from being able to do this.

My biggest concern is that his name won't be on the V5 and the chances are the viewing will be on an idustrial estate or such...head sayng no but the car looks like a good one.

His name probably will not be on the V5. I do not think this is too much of a problem. He will have some excuse for this, but on the flip side that will mean the car will be one owner less.

But if he does not invite you to his house to buy it, then I would be a lot more concerned.

Update chaps...

Just spoken to the guy to arrange to look at the car later. He is going to meet me at a Holiday nn just off the motorway and then take me to his place...which is someting, i definitely wouldn't hand over 4k in a random car park.

I shall report back when i've seen the car....

Keep any thoughts coming...

Just done a HPI and all is well. Last owner change is 1997 so i'm pretty sure his name wont be on the V5...how do i approach this? try and contact the recorded keep who is still on the V5 to check all is well?

Dont worry about who is in the V5, we already know he is a dealer, so it will not tell you anything new.

The last owner bought it when it was still worth a good few quid, and kept it a long time, which is good sign.

Keep what you know to yourself, give the guy a chance to explain where it comes from he may lie, he may come clean, see what he does. If the car is good, like I said does it really matter?

ETA:

On the other hand if he lies, and you have doubts about the car, then you know what to do. Trust your instincts.

Don't know why i put 1997, last keeper change was actually August 2007. Hpi confirms the 3 previous owners which the seller states though, which is good.

I would have thought the guy obviously knows XJS's well.....the biggest benefit of selling Jaguars as a private man rather than a dealer, is no warranty claims and SOGA to worry about.

a. If someone's "dealing" then they're a "dealer" and the usual warranties will apply, although it's up to you to make your case. Wouldn't be difficult if you can show a string of ad's.

b. If someone's "dealing" but pretending not to be a "dealer" then there's a good chance they're cheating the tax man. A dealer's profit on sales of cars is subject to income tax.

c. If someone's willing to cheat the tax man then there's a good chance they're willing to cheat you as well....
