hold my hand & tell me i've done the right thing? (LCR225)
Discussion
right then,
recent improvements on the job front means i am now able to return from a year in the wilderness while tootling around in a kangoo van and return to something with a bit of pace...
(incidently a year-with-a-van as a private daily driver has been an interesting experience and certainly not all bad, but its probably not very ph)
ok here's the brief
(a cheeky what car? maybe)
ok so, i am aware of the saying fast/cheap/reliable only 2 is possible. but lets see what we can do
my subjective thoughts feel free to tear them apart...
E36 M3 - getting old, too expensive to run and i would feel that everytime i hoofed it. Insurance is silly for me still age 29. Bikes are tricky.
E36 328sport touring manual. hmmm.
DC2 - wanted one for ages, but suddenly fallen foul of my chavvy rule. I hate this rule, why has this happened to me? Its how i feel about though
Civic type R EP3 - a strong contender. Like the vids on yourtube of tiff giving one stick. No big wing like the DC2 but always the drivers poor relation. hmmm
Audi S4 - the twin turbo jobby. never really set the motoring press alight BUT has a good following and i've seen modded ones at V-MAX do very silly things. I am sucker for AVUS blue too. Potential for big bills and standard handling puts me off. Older Audis like an S2 5pot estate are getting a bit long in tooth now, non?
Scooby - i'd love to have the balls to buy a STI classic wagon (or even a nice UK wagon with ppp or similar) but image/insurance/costs and mostly fuel makes it a non starter
Scooby 2 - legacy gtb - had a think about this but again mpg is pretty bad!
so after much tought i've put down a deposit on a late 2005 silver Leon Cupra R 225. Subject to independent checking saying its ok next week i think i am going to pull the trigger on it. Fully comp insurance £373.00.
i like the idea of a rapid tardis that is not a complete pile of poo on the way into an apex and just for once i'd like to do it with aircon and the rest. Am i getting old? The venerable 1.8T is pretty understressed and i guess after a few months a trip to AMD or REVO sees me at 265bhp or there abouts. All this in what will hopefully be VAG reliability and in silver not, err overly, you know, innit blud?
But there's a little pain gnawing away at me. The ph'er deep inside is screaming saying 'you have not bought the most driver focussed pick' and that makes me a sell-out.
Or
have i bought the jack of all that best fits my needs and bank account and for christmas i can treat myself to nearly 300 horses under foot?
Tell me i am doing the right thing! PLEASE!

ok here's the brief
- budget 6-7k. ish.
- reasonable pace. (ideally as or faster than my old 306 rallye)
- reasonable handling (in someway adjustable to driver input)
- room inside for 2x mountain bikes with wheels off plus camping kit. (Easily done, not in a E36 coupe its-possible-but-a-pain-in-the-arse type way!)
- ability to put a soft rack on for a surfboard on the roof. yes i am that non-sensical that bikes have to be in but its ok for the board up top. sorry. (Bike trips are more common and further distances travelled)
- does not drink fuel. (scoobies are out)
- is reliable and modernish. Will get me to work everyday and if i bend it, it will probably see me fight another day.
- not too bad on insurance or running costs
- NOT chavvy. (this one is totally subjective by the way)

I don't understand the 'chavvy' requirement. It's a car, there it has no personality in that respect. Unless you are a complete scrote I don't see how a car can be 'chavvy'.
it has no scientific basis to it whatsoever.would i feel a little bit silly driving this car at certain times? Probably.
