Central locking remote has just stopped working on my dog wagon 05 Astra.

The drivers door is the only door with a key hole, and turning the key in this lock ONLY locks the drivers door, and does not set the alarm.

What utter cocktard thought that was a good idea ?

Bet I have to pay the bloody dealer £60 or so to code the remote again too. mad

It's usually that way so you can still lock the car when popping into the shops and leave a kid or dog in the car for a moment.

I think many cars can be locked by the key and the alarm set by turning the key three times consecutively. Have you got the owners manual?

A mate had the same problem on an astra when his central locking went tits up.

To lock all of the doors he used to have to wind the drivers window down, get out and close the door, lean in and press the door lock button on the dash, then press the auto up on the window switch. This would then secure the car,l but no alarm.

Funny that the drivers door key hole unlocks all of the doors but doesn't lock them... backwards vauxhall design i suppose.

Im 90% sure its just the battery in the remote, but Im just as sure its not a case of chucking a new battery in it.

Im sure these things are designed with revenue streams designed in you know.

Got a new battery for mine from Vauxhall, cost £2, they even put it in, no need for reprogramming

I am thinking that if the central locking ain't working under any circumstances it ain't the remote

Checked the fuses?

Does the key unlock everything?

What shape of Astra, the 4 or 5? If its the 4 the fobs are nice and cheap from a certain auction site, and the batteries are the easiest in the world to get to.

Thanks Baz, do you know if it needs coding after I fit a new battery ?

Have you tried holding the key in the "lock" position for a couple of seconds? Different car I know, but our Focus has a similar thing, where it does a simple door lock if you turn the key, but holding it in position arms the alarm.

Didn't have to code anything on our Saab 9-5 ('04 plate), once I got the key apart without removing any fingers.

...random guess it's similar-ish, being GM.

Ah the mk5, IIRC when you replace the battery to recode it all you do is put the key in the ignition, switch to the on position on the ignition and hold down the lock (or unlock, I forget)button. The doors should lock then unlock confirming its coded. Its how it works on Mk4s and Vectra b's anyway laugh
