Driving through Keighley earlier and spotted a pick up driving about with two kids sat on the back deck. They even looked like the bunch of red-necks you'd expect mad

Wish I'd got a photo to report them.

And some tosspot stole my wing mirror glass overnight. No glass on floor, no damage to casing and the wires disconnected at the clips furious

I used to ride in the back of our pick up, but that was in the sticks when we were travelling between fields to check on the livestock or when we were out shooting.

Happy days.

Indeed won't you think of the children. Poor little dears should be inside wrapped up in cotton wool.

During the shooting season its how we travel between drives, I don't see the problem at low speeds as long as they aren't messing around in there.

Whilst I agree, travelling like that at low speeds is fine (we do it on site) around town at 40mph is just stupid, especially in Keighley where the driving is exceptionally poor!

Did this at Le Mans this year. Eight guys, one twin cab pick-up. Gendarmes couldn't give a hoot.

I can remember sitting in the spare wheel on my Father's S1 landy, aged well under 10, when bimbling along green lanes. Bloody brilliant experience.

Dad borrowed a wooden-box trailer back in the 1970s, to take stuff to the tip. The kids in my road and I enjoyed a relatively sedate tow around our estate in it. I must have been no more than 6yo at the time. No harm done if the parent keeps an eye on things.

Difficult for the rest of us to judge the scenario in the OP. On the surface we probably all revolt at the over-nanying we receive in this country but if the kids were sitting on the open tail gate, at speed, well I would agree it's too dangerous.

We weren't there.

I used to occasionally travel in the back of a friend's dad's pickup when I was a kid and I don't seem to have died a horrible death from it...

Strangely enough I saw something yesterday that would fit with this thread. I saw a bloke on a quad bike coming the otherway at speed (40+) with a young kid (under three) sat on the petrol tank. Neither had helmets.

Catching up with them fairly rapidly was a Police van with the Blues n Twos on.

When you and the others did it was wearing seat belts the law, if not everyone seemed to drive a lot better than today and looked out for other vehicles more because if they had an accident it would hurt. Now with all the safety items in cars like pre-tensioning belts, air bags and crumple zone average drivers have got lazy and know if they have an urban accident they will not get hurt.

Perhaps?
