Soon embarking on a driving tour of Scotland, which I am much looking forward to.

Only got 3 and a bit days of driving so would rather have cars waiting for us when we get there.

What's the best way to get to Scotland (Stirling preferred) and have our cars arriving shortly after or just before?

Is there any sort of motor rail in the UK? I suspect I would have heard of it by now, so guess there isn't one?

So, if no motor-rail what's are the best alternatives?

I know I'm a bit of a pussy for not driving there both way, but I promise, I've done it before and I want to get more time in Scotland!

The TVR T350 should be a blast. Those roads are bliss...

Get a ferry from Harwich to the Hook of Holland, then drive to Zeebrugge and get the ferry to Rosyth. That would be one way at least. Either that or go to https://www.shiply.com/ and see what you can find.

Why not get a quote from a transport company (IIRC Iguana here runs just such a company) to get the car up there with TLC, leaving just yourselves to get up there on either a sleeper train, or more cheaply a flight wink

There was a motorrail service in the past (closed in 1995?) but it wasn't popular and was shut down.

The closest airport to Stirling is Edinburgh.

If money isn't a problem, some sort of car delivery company (putting the car on the back of a truck and dealing with it for you) is probably your best bet.

If money is a factor, drive.

Enjoy yourself, but remember that Scotland has a speed limit too..

We're heading up from London. If trains aren't an option (Ferry's would defeat the time purpose I reckon) what should a decent quote for transporting two sports cars to Stirling or such be?

When in Stirling keep away from the Raploch or someone will have your wheels off overnight....

Also, the A80 into Glasgow is full of roadworks with average speed cameras til next year wink

Seriously? You're going on a driving holiday and you want the cars transported there?

London - Stirling is 5.5-6 hours in good traffic, i make the journey twice a week.

Lame.

I can see the problem though. If the op has just 3 days of driving available, he's not going to want to spend 12 hours of it on motorways. Car transport or a longer break seem like the only other options. Or I'll drive one there! smile

Options
1 Car Transporter to Stirling and fly London - Glasgow

or

2 Drive London - Stirling

1
Travel home to London Airport 1hr
Check in and wait for flight 1hr
Flight 1.5hr
Wait for luggage 0.5hr
Transport to Stirling 1hr

Total 5hrs (all going well,no delays etc)

2
Drive to Stirling 7-7-1/2hrs (again no delays etc)

2hr saving by not driving, just not worth it IMO.

In the good old days, someone I know very well did Portsmouth to Glasgow in under 5 hours. This would not really be news, except it was in a Ford Ka.

Hi all, many thanks for the thoughts and the kind words about the cars. I would appear that a car transporter is possibly the only option. We'll fly out Thu night and have the cars ready for us then I think. That way we can start Friday driving in Scotland and do the motorways on the way back.

If only the trip took 5/6 hours! In my experience it's always taken 7 plus - perhaps been unlucky with traffic.

Oh and Craigwww, you're a joke. I love chaps like you - been on a forum for 5 months and think that the relative anonymity that a forum provides allows you to speak to people in a manner you wouldn't dare to adopt if they were in front of you. Next time, read the post clearly and try to understand why a question is asked, before providing a completely unhelpful opinion.

Whereabouts in London are you?! I've just done an AA Routeplanner route from Watford to Stirling and that's 403 miles. 5½ hours for that journey would be an average speed of 73mph...

briSk, that made me laugh! Let them eat cake says I!! Not the first time we've seen eye to eye if I recall...

Rob, the map doesn't lie, the distances and ideal times are correct, but I am an unlucky SOB and I never get the clear stretch of roads I deserve - hence buggering off to Scotland!! I live in St John's Wood so it's battling out of traffic here to an extend... Thanks though mate... smile

I did Edinburgh to Bath in 6 1/2 hours in a diesel 306 once. Of course going south it's all downhill...

Sorry, you must have mis-understood, I was defending you smile The point I was making is that even if you're already in a town quite a way North of London it would still take a desperate dash breaking the speed limit with perhaps one lightning fast fuel/piss stop to make it to Stirling in 5½ hours. As you rightly say, not the stuff of holidays!! Besides, motorways are boring smile I'd do what you're planning on doing.
