Hi

Insurance at my current location is in the region of 2k, at a friends house in a nearby city it is £500, I am planning on registering the car, insurance, driving license at my mates address, anyone know of any issues with this besides the obvious, any bad experiences with claiming on insurance?

yes, one slight problem. Its called fraud.

Your insurer will ask where the car is kept overnight, so unless you plan on leaving it at your friends house overnight, every night, then it isnt actually properly insured.

It's fraud, and your £500 will be utterly wasted if you try to make a claim. Insurance companies can easily see that you don't live at that address because they share details with your bank and utility companies and they will have this flagged up from the word "go".

If you can't afford the insurance, sell the car.

... and when they investigate you after a crash they might void your insurance.

I wouldn't say it's worth the risk. I'm sure the insurance company would look into it in the event of a claim. Your car wouldn't be properly insured, and you'd be labelled with being fraudulent. Don't do it smile

A good example if that of my girlfriend's car. She's learning to drive and her car's insured and kept at my house, which is about half the price of insuring it at her flat (£400 vs £800 I think). We've enquired and a two week stay up at hers is the maximum the insurance company will tolerate before needing to pay the large wedge to have it registered as kept there.

I do understand your dilemna though, the way insurance works is stupid. My Elise was less money to insure on my parents' driveway than it is in my house's garage in a village 10 miles away. I've been told the reason is that my area has a higher average claim value (lots of country houses with Lambos, Ferraris etc nearby) - utterly ridiculous - my Lotus is still worth what it's worth! In my girlfriend's case, she lives in a very nice leafy suburb of London with a very low crime rate, but the insurance is so high because 5 miles down the road is a dodgy area with a high crime rate.

It's stupid, but we have to play their game I'm afraid.

or just not pay the insurance fee and run the risk of being caught, too be honest the OP will not be insured in the event of a crash as he has been telling porkies to the insurance people who will pull the cover and he will have to pay all the losses himself

It is still fraud, as you aren't declaring the truth about where the car really lives. And they will use it to avoid paying a claim, and may also put the fraud down on the insurers' database, making it virtualy impossible to get insurance in the future.

I have a motorbike registered at a friend's house, and that is indeed where it lives, in a locked garage. I would not keep it at my house, having declared it is locked up elsewhere...

Yes it is. Simple as that.

Its dishonest, its fraud and it could put you in all sorts of sh*t if you hit another car/person and the insurance company come after you for the money they have to pay out to 3rd parties.

In case you hadn't noticed the fact that something is a bit of a bummer, doesn't make it OK to break the law. Life isn't fair - ask anyone who has been hit by somebody not insured.

Of course it is still fraud - you are aquiring a cheaper insurance premium by providing information that isnt true.

And why is no-one else's reply serious? we've all said the same thing, which is you can do it, but if you are caught or need to claim, you will find yourself in a huge amount of trouble.

Look, you've been told what the situation is. It is fraud.

Are you now hoping for some success stories from people who have committed this fraud and got away with it?

I think your question has been answered comprehensively.
