How many of these threads are we going to have?

Anyone a crap driver, and would openly admit is lucky to have passed their test?

I was a nervous driver for a start, but I've been driving for 4 1/2 years now after passing my test first time (luckily), as both my Mother and my driving instructor both said I had no hope in hell of passing!!!

Now I feel I'm pretty competent at driving, and getting better and better at hustling a car quickly.

When questioned, 90% of drivers believed they were above average drivers. . . . . . . wink

I was lucky to pass my test, but whilst not a driving God hope to God* that I am a better driver than most on the road smile

Well technically I don't but please insert the common name of your mythical sky dweller of choice here if you have one.

My driving's OK, except that I'm utterly utterly useless at finding my way around.

Without sat nav, I need a full time navigator, other option is pure randomness, or pulling over to check a map at every step.

I seem to be the only male with this affliction... besides james may

(and yes, I've also got lost on race tracks)

Nope. Absolutely the same. My sense of direction is utterly appalling.

I'm a crap driver. Luckily I live in Dubai where everyone is a crap driver. Actually, I guess that makes me above average...

I'm an absolute speed freak, I try to slow down but can't, with a lot of luck (and judgement IMO), I manage to get around despite my speed, which is usually well into triple figures! drivingangel

I know where my driving is lacking, I think the people that can't see where they could improve are those that are really poor drivers. Personally I need to improve my car control past the limit of grip. I can hurry a car round a track consistently but I know I couldn't yet make the step to racing and having to make changes to lines etc while already on limit. If I do I won't always catch the car so I need instruction in that area. Also i've never risen a bike so at 33 I've now decided to learn so have theory on Wednesday cbt next sat and module one the following Thursday hopefully module two the week after. No intention of actually getting a bike mind.

I think there are many aspects to driving and most people have strengths and weaknesses across those various aspects. If someone says they're a "good driver", then unless they're being deliberately brief, it shows a certain lack of appreciation of all the various facets of driving. wink

Personally, as far as weaknesses go, my main one is that I have a tendency to get very bored keeping to the speed limit when I think it's safer to go faster (usually this is on certain sections of rural B and A roads where the limit's been reduced to 50 or even 40 for seemingly no reason at all). I'm also perhaps a bit too careful sometimes, leaving perhaps more safety margin than is strictly necessary, but I suppose I'd rather be too careful than too dangerous. I'm also a bit too careful with the car mechanically, and frequently get road rage from other drivers for crawling over speed bumps too slowly.

I'm ok at driving around. Make a few mistakes from time to time. Essentially talentless, and wouldn't know what to do on a track. Good on go-karts and computer games though! Had a couple of small prangs. I cringe when I read PH'ers talking about left-foot braking etc on the road - proper gay.

I can drive fast pretty well, I can park pretty well and hold a car sideways pretty well.

I cannot do roundabouts. Double mini roundabouts terrify me.

I would like to think I would pass my test again but I doubt it.

The only reason I havent had lots of accidents is because I have good reactions, although I do try to drive so that I dont need to react to situations.

Harry old chap, my wife would put me immediately in said catagory, she doesnt let me near the map!

As regards driving ability though. I can drive. Its just something I can do. Where it gets worrying is when things get crossed up. I correct them, control them, hang on, sort it out and come out the other side. I dont know how or why though and that worries the hell out of me. I rarely go for a hoon hoon the way many people talk about it, ragging, etc. I dont like the idea of the back end stepping out, I dont want to powerslide everywhere. Half my brain says "but it doesnt matter, you know you can control all that" and the other half says "but you dont know why. You might not, therefore, it might all have been luck before". It is something I cannot analysise, scrutinise, inspect and therefore acquire absolute control over micro-second by micro-second.

Im an introspective engineer, being able to do something by instinct is an alien idea to me, unless I can pull it all apart and examine it Im not comfortable!

I'm a really slow driver, this I've always known. However, I didn't know just how slow until recently at a rally experience day where I was the slowest by 13 seconds. Ouch.

I'll usually sit at 60-70mph on the motorway because I just can't be bothered with all the lane changing involved in overtaking.

Sure, I'd like a fast car and to learn how to drive it, but on these roads I can't see the point so I just don't bother trying.

That's a weakness in my track driving: I've never learnt to left foot brake properly. I'm also not terribly good at overtaking or stopping myself being overtaken in races either.

I can control a car quite well, but my impatience is only exceeded by my intolerance of other road users general uselessness. I suspect that precludes me from being a good driver.

ETA - That's not to say I'm outwardly aggressive to other road users, but I have been told I bh constantly within the car.
