Obviously there are lovely cars out there to be driven in - Arnage, S Class, LS460...
And then there are wonderful cars out there to drive - M3, 911, RS4..

.. but what's a nice car (with a littel oomph evil) to actually drive yourself?

I quite like the driver environment of something like the Arnage or the Conti GT, but A. they don't ncessarily offer the most rewarding drive and B. not exactly affordable daily options (although I suppose it's all relative)

What are the options up to say £20k? (New Mondeo money?)

Old S Class has to be a strong contender or the biggest best-spec'd (secondhand) Lexus barge for the money.

well ive had a fair few cars as per profile but the most luxurious I ever drove was a merc CLS500 which i took from London to shropshire to collect my 355 (which then felt like driving sat on a scalpel).

The CLS had massive power, all the toys, super comfy seats and great positioning, superb car.

That's the point - in my opinion, unless you have a reasonable sum of money to spend (£30k+), there doesn't seem to be a car that exists that fits BOTH - is luxurious AND rewarding to drive..

.. why not??

I don't quite understand the question.

You say luxurious, then comment on the Bentley not being the most rewarding drive.

I don't think luxurious and rewarding really go hand in hand, so not sure what sort of car you're really talking about. Pick one or the other.
I'd say they're not necessarily incompatible - a luxurious feeling car that happens to handle well and offer the driver some feedback.

Maybe E39 M5, Lotus Europa, Boxster. Or an old Bently Turbo R?

Way over budget, but an Aston Virgae/V8 coupe and Bentley Continental R and T are probably the pinnacles of this.

For £20k, well a used Jag, XJS or XK8/R spring to mind as obvious candidates or a Jag saloon, XJ8/R.

I'm sure BMW/Merc offer something too, although rather more German.

If it's just good pace, comfy interior, fun and enough gadgets to keep you happy. Then I reckon you'd be hard pushed to truly better one of these:

Not quite the leather clad interior of a Jag. But with IUP they are very nice looking inside, and with a few minor suspension mods are a really good steer.

Best of both worlds then, great GT long distance cruiser when you want it to be, but also a tarmac tearing hooligans machine when needed. smile

I'm on my second ALPINA, I reckon they've got the balance of luxury and driver involvement just about perfect. smile

The new Mondeo or Insignia?

Don't laugh. For space, ride, body control and interior design they run yesterdays luxury cars close or beat them with a big stick.

Well assuming you are talking new or nearly new here then when looking at the prices of the cars it's worth remembering that "luxurious" and "rewarding" driver experiences are somewhat at odds with each other so to get both together requires alot of R&D effort and that's expensive.

Lexus LS series are great cars to be driven in, but NOT to drive. 7 series BMW's are wonderful be it in the front or the back.

My choice would be either an Alpina B7 or a Brabus S V12 R.
