First of all - sorry for the long post, but I'm keen to get some help from the PH massive on this, given your inclusive and compassionate nature when it comes to discussing relationships..

Discovered an old flame of mine recently is living next door to my parents. I haven't actually seen her or been in touch for more than 6 years (barring a brief dalliance about 5 years ago when my Maserati was in for service as she sorted me out for lifts which led to a few thilling moments in a field in Surrey but I digress).

Anyway, the guy she has been with for the last 3 years has seriously neglected her, she has been stuck at home day after day with hardly any fun or outings or holidays, just the endless drudgery of staring at 4 walls, and nipping to the shops occasionally which is enough to drive anyone mad I suppose.

Anyway, I always thought she was very attractive, and was a seriously good laugh. We had a not so serious relationship for a few months on and off for several summers, and although she was never the usual sort of girl (i.e. not seriously high maintenance) I would go for, I was always very happy in her company and enjoyed every minute of our time together. In the end we kind of drifted apart and ended up with other partners and life went on.

Anyway, she is suddenly available again and has left the guy who has basically been abusing her and has been asking after me specfifically. So, the question I have is - is it worth going back? Will it feel the same? 5 years is a long time and we're not getting any younger, so I'm prepared for things to be a little saggy here and there, and especially given the neglect of her current man she will probably need some time to get back to her old self. I guess that it's quite possible that the rot has set in, her lungs won't be quite as good as the used to be and that she just won't be physically capable of the kind of fun we used to have. Mainly I'm just concerned that she won't have the same kind of feel, eagerness and lightness of touch that she used to, and also that the years of neglect might mean that she is no longer the reliable trustworthy companion I remember.

So help me out.

She is a 1995 M Reg Fiesta 1.25 Zetec, she has been SORNed for 3 years and will need new tyres and a battery. I'd dearly love to get her back as a station car. However, I'm concerned about serious rust and where to look for it - where should I be checking? (Chassis / jacking points / sills / wheelarches?) What minimal work should I be doing to ensure that she will last a few more years?

Or should I just walk away and remember the good times....

Very good.

Never driven one but if it isn't really special (relatively speaking) then I think it's a case of rose-tinted spectacles. So you need to ask if it really is that great a car for you. I enjoyed 5 years with a Chimaera... then a few years later, after driving a fair number of different sports cars, test drove another and fell in love again. I will get another.

Brilliant, I was muttering dark things about PH until that last paragraph.

Cheered me up there, thanks.

Personally, I wouldn't touch anything older than a 14 year-old. The chassis on post-1996 models is far more thrilling.

Very good bow Gold Star Mr Tony.

And i would be nervous of going back, but she might deserve a last hurrah before the knackers yard.

You're one of those blokes who kisses a girl and then brags he smashed her back doors in to his mates. You're fibbing. Wanna know how I know? They never made 1.25's on the M reg.
