I'm in desperate need to sell my car by next week, as i want to change cars before my insurance renewal.

Would i be doing anything illegal by putting for sale signs in my rear side windows? Not restricting my view at all...

But i was also concerned if i'm breaking any laws by doing so? (May sound silly but it wouldn't surprise me)

Also has anyone got any experience with eBay classifieds? As with 2,500 Astra's for sale on here at the moment its kinda hard to get noticed..

Cheers
Dan

No not illegal, go for it.

Personally I wouldn't bother with Ebay Classifieds. I'd start with PH classifieds and Autotrader. thumbup

^ This!

I've only ever sold one car and one bike through Ebay and wasn't worth the cost and hassle.

Sling and ad on here and one on AT

Just don't do what many people do and write "For Sale" on the top of the advert. A stupid fecking waste of space and ink. Put the price on in big bold, not "For Sale"

O/T but I'm buying another car soon and would like to know:

Do people still use Autotrader since they slapped that stupid flash-application on top of what used to be a perfectly usable website?

If you really have to sell it quick, how about 'we buy any car'? You're not going to get private money for it, but they will buy it quickly. Alternatively advertise it at rock bottom price in as many places as you can and maybe pimp it around some of the local independent garages and see if they'll give you anything for it.

It isn't illegal to put a for sale sign in the rear side window, but I'd be surprised if it often leads to a sale.

Be careful of we buy any car type places if you want to make a sensible sale.

They will usually quote you happy over the phone, then start deducting things (eg. road fund license) from the amount they are willing to pay, when you actually get to their offices. Anything amiss (eg repaired damage which can only be found with a paint thickness meter) will deduct from the sale.

The missus and I ended up just taking the money from them as we'd had her old car sat about for 6 months and tbh I didn't mind losing a couple of hundred quid just to be rid of the thing. But I did that with my eyes wide open, be sure you're the same if you go down that route.

Oddly, you can put signs in whilst driving or parked in a car park but you are not permitted to park on the road with the signs in, it apparently isn't legal.

I was called by the Police and told to remove mine or they'd crush the car, despite it having tax, MOT and insurance.

Not true, although exposing two or more cars for sale within 500m of each other on a road is an offence under the Clean Neighbourhoods and Environment Act 2005.

Might also be worth putting on the ad that it is a private sale as when I see a car for sale by the side of the road I cant help but wonder if its being sold by some dodgy trader.

Good luck with the sale smile

I heard a rumour that those chav cars with for sale signs where a way of getting your number out so you could arrange meets and races etc. but keep it subtle.

Put the price.

Put the contact number.

Then put the advert, in much smaller writing. Include lots of stuff abour your car - basically, try and sell it. People will come up and read the stuff if they're interested.

I also tend to make a big, eye catching for sale sign for either the windscreen or across the roof like a dealer (ry-tie + dowel = blue peter special smile ) if it's going to be parked on a busy/flowing road. It does catch the eye wink

To be fair I thought it was also illegal to sell your car on the highway. Can't remember where I saw the info before

I wouldn't worry about ti though. Stick the signs up, I'd even put one in the rear (no different to a panel van) and as others have said, Price, MoT, Tax and mileage are the first thing people want to see! Not a massive FOR SALE.

Don't forget your number also! lol

My local council got arsey a year or two ago about people selling cars while parked. Lasted about a week, when they got bored and went back to the usual pensioner persecution.

But how do I know you're not just boasting that you bought the car at that price with that specification? spin

Put my daughter's car on PH the other week and it sold within 2 hours. Extremely impressed.

Thank you PH
